August is when serious punters begin looking for early form to discover which horses will win major spring races like the Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup and it all begins soon with the Winx Stakes.

Although run at Sydney’s Randwick course, the Winx Warwick Stakes serves as a one of the best Melbourne Spring Carnival starting points for the top shelf weight-for-age gallopers, and in 2018 the race has been officially promoted to Group I level.

Past winners of the 1400m feature racing classic include the race’s namesake and champion mare Winx, as well as Lonhro, Racing To Win, Shaftesbury Avenue, and Super Impose – which points to the race’s obvious class and Group I status.

The race can be easily narrowed down to just a few serious chances, as many of the runners are stayers getting fit for the big money longer races later in the Spring Carnival in October and November.
