Canterbury Bulldogs vs Canberra Raiders
Most of the interest in Friday night’s two matchups will be centred around the second game of the evening, but the clash between the Bulldogs and the Raiders shapes up as a close one, if nothing else. Canterbury have been disappointing more often than not this season, but an 18-16 win over the Dragons last week took their record to 4-5 and just a solitary game out of the top eight. The Raiders, too, have won four games this year, but the last three of them have come in consecutive games, adding the Dolphins to a list of teams they’ve beaten in that period which already included the Dragons and the Broncos. Digging themselves a hole early in the season after the way they both started and finished last year was disappointing, but they’ve quickly evened their record at 4-4 (with one bye thrown in there) to keep themselves in touch with the top eight. The Bulldogs are not an easy team to predict, but their win against the Dragons aside they’ve been struggling for a month now. The Raiders should be backing themselves to come away from Sydney with the points on Friday night.

Manly Sea Eagles vs Brisbane Broncos
After a good couple of weeks the Sea Eagles took a big step backwards last week, and things don’t get any easier on Friday night. Their reliance on Tom Trbojevic is no secret, but it was brought to the forefront last weekend when they went down without much of a whimper to the Titans in his absence. Now, they have to go up against the top-of-the-table Broncos this Friday night, though they weren’t at their best last weekend either. After winning seven of their first eight games, Brisbane were battered from pillar to post by the Rabbitohs, going down 32-6 in their second loss of the year. This game will be an interesting test to see how they react. Thus far this season they haven’t had to deal with a lot of on-field adversity courtesy of their winning ways, but they were put to the sword by a very good team last weekend. All eyes will be watching them this Friday night to find out whether they respond with vigour, or whether this begins a slide for the team that has sat on top of the ladder throughout the season to date. Trbojevic seems like a good chance to return which will certainly tighten things up, but even with him there, the Broncos should be able to bounce back with a win.

New Zealand Warriors vs Penrith Panthers
After a good start to the year the Warriors put in perhaps their most lacklustre performance of the season against the Roosters last weekend, failing to get a score on the board in their 14-0 loss. It was certainly no blowout and they proved hard to score against themselves, but zero points in 80 minutes is never a good thing, and with the team which has conceded the least number of points so far this season by some margin in the Panthers waiting for them this weekend, it’s not going to get any easier. The Panthers are, however, coming off a shock loss, having gone down to the winless Wests Tigers 12-8 last Saturday. That was about as surprising a result as you could imagine in the NRL, and the Panthers aren’t the side who are likely to dish up a performance like that two weeks in a row. The Warriors have only lost one game at home so far this year and should be able to keep this somewhat competitive, but the Panthers should be too strong.

Cronulla Sharks vs The Dolphins
The Sharks’ start to the year suggested they might struggle to replicate the form which saw them finish in the top two last season, but they’ve quickly changed that narrative over the last three weeks. Following strong wins over the Roosters and the Bulldogs, they came up against the other team which came from the clouds to finish top four last season in the Cowboys, and demolished them. They set the tone with a first minute try to Siosifa Talakai in that game and ultimately went on to win 44-6, and they shouldn’t have too many problems adding another comfortable win to their record this weekend. The Dolphins’ dream start to the season hasn’t turned to a nightmare by any means, but they have lost four of their last six after winning their first three, the latest of which was a one-point win to the Raiders. They’re still being fairly consistently competitive and so won’t likely be blown out of the water, but it’s hard to see them upsetting the Sharks in Cronulla.

Melbourne Storm vs South Sydney Rabbitohs
The match of the round takes place on Saturday night, when the Melbourne Storm take on the South Sydney Rabbitohs at AAMI Park. These are two bonafide Premiership contenders who have each lost just a solitary game over the past five weeks; the Storm’s defeat coming to the Sea Eagles a fortnight ago, and the Rabbitohs when these sides last met five weeks ago. On that occasion, the Storm won 18-10 in Sydney, which bodes well for them on their home turf this time around. The Bunnies, however, are in some serious form. Having beaten the Panthers two weeks ago they took apart the top-of-the-table Broncos like they were a bottom feeder, dismantling them to the tune of 32-6. They’re playing as well as anybody in the league at the moment, and have the advantage of not having to head to AAMI Park for an away game against the Storm. They are in the kind of form which may just allow them to get the points against another very good side in a tight, pulsating affair.

Wests Tigers vs St. George Illawarra Dragons
At long last, the Tigers have a win on the board! It only took until Round 9, but while it might be a stretch to say it was worth the wait, the victory certainly went some way to alleviating the frustration caused to the fanbase for the preceding two months. The Tigers were widely expected to be pummelled by the Panthers, and rightly so. Instead, they took it right up to the two-time reigning champions, knocking them off 12-8 in a remarkable result. This week, they have a great chance to do it again when they come up against the struggling Dragons. The Dragons have now lost four games on the trot after a disappointing 18-16 loss to the Bulldogs last weekend, though with three of those results having come by two points or less and the other by just six it could easily have been very different. The Tigers will have their tails up after last weekend’s win, but the Dragons have been competitive against better teams over the past month, and can finally get the chocolates in a tight game.

Sydney Roosters vs North Queensland Cowboys
The Roosters haven’t been at their best over the first couple of months, but their defensive capabilities were on full show last weekend as they held the Warriors scoreless to record a 14-0 victory and take their record to 5-3. They should have no troubles keeping the ball rolling when they welcome the Cowboys to Sydney this Sunday. This season has been nothing short of a disaster for the Cowboys, who have now lost four of their last five and find themselves sitting ahead of only the Tigers on the NRL ladder after making a Preliminary Final last year. They put in perhaps their worst effort of the year last weekend, going down 44-6 to the Sharks, and it won’t be any easier against the Roosters. For their sake, hopefully they can avoid the kind of drubbing they were on the receiving end of last week, but it’s very hard to imagine them winning this one.

Gold Coast Titans vs Parramatta Eels
The round concludes with an intriguing clash between two sides who have endured difficult seasons to date at times, but who are both coming off strong victories last weekend. The Titans proved far too good for a disappointing, Trbojevic-less Sea Eagles, winning 26-10 to square their win-loss record at 4-4. In a quirky but relatively useless stat, that was their first consecutive game in which they’ve scored 26 points, though reflective of their defensive struggles, the other two of those ended in defeat. The Eels, meanwhile, have lost plenty of close games to good teams, but made sure of the result against the Knights last weekend. A first minute try to Dylan Brown was followed by five more in the first half alone, and by the time the final whistle sounded they’d taken their lead to 43-12. Though they find themselves in 12th position, last year’s runners-up haven’t been nearly as bad as their record suggests this year, and with an easier run of games to come than what they faced early in the season it’s easy to see them get on a roll. That can begin this weekend with a second consecutive win.
