Shane Van Gisbergen continues his Adelaide 500 love affair
by Ken Edwards, 05 March 2018
Shane van Gisbergen has extended his perfect record at the Adelaide 500, making it 4-0 over the 2017 and 2018 Adelaide Supercar race weekends.
Pressing his case as 2018 Supercars Championship favourite, the New Zealander converted his second pole position to a victory in as many days, holding off David Reynolds to win Sunday’s Race 2.
Garth Tander finished with an impressive third place for Garry Rogers Motorsport after a dramatic race of crashes, incidents and retirements among the leading drivers, including dramas for 2017 title rivals Jamie Whincup and Scott McLaughlin.
“Jamie had the car to beat today and we went a bit far with our set-up and we were no good compared to yesterday,” van Gisbergen said.
“It’s a real shame we couldn’t get a one-two … I hate getting points gaps like that but that’s part of racing and hopefully we can have fairer battles for the rest of the year,” he added.
Van Gisbergen celebrates the 26th race win of his career and joins Whincup (08, 09) and Marcos Ambrose (04, 05) as the only drivers to claim four consecutive victories on the Adelaide Street Circuit.
New Holden’s are Lightning Fast
The new German built Holden Commodore was an outstanding success, finishing 1-2-3-4 over the weekend’s racing.
Adelaide 500 2018 showed off the debut of the ZB Commodore amongst the Holden competitors in race mode. Pioneered by the team at Red Bull Holden, the ZB employs lighter composite material panels in certain areas rather than factory OEM components. Concerns have been raised by rivals despite the new Commodore meeting the Supercars new minimum weight criteria.
The issue centres around the lighter panels along the lines of the ZB Commodore implementing a reduced centre of gravity which would theoretically lessens vehicle body rolls in cornering and improving car weight transfer and lessening tyre wear.
