Can the Perth Scorchers back-up to win their 4th BBL title?
PERTH Scorchers coach Justin Langer thinks it’s funny many are calling his team BBL-title-favourites. He may have as few as nine main-squad-players to choose from for most of the upcoming season.
The Perth Scorchers are $5.00 second favourites with Sportsbet to take this year’s BBL. We don’t think they can win the comp for the fourth time in 6 years, but they’ll still be very tough to beat in Perth.
Scorchers Injuries and international call-ups
Langer’s duo of star pacemen, Jason Behrendorff and Nathan Coulter-Nile will miss the start of the tournament through back injuries and regular first-team-keeper, Sam Whiteman may miss the entire season.
Whilst Langer is delighted with the form of the Marsh brothers in Baggy Green and Cameron Bancroft’s call-up, it threatens the Scorchers title defence. Other possible international call-ups for the ODI series include Ashton Agar, Hilton Cartwright, Joel Paris, Jhye Richardson and England’s David Willey. It’s possible that the Scorchers could be fielding a totally inexperienced side for most of the month-long tournament. However, many critics are saying the Scorchers are still one-of-the-sides to beat.
Scorchers Two Key Men
In Mitchell Johnson and Michael Klinger, the Scorchers boast two of the most dynamic players in BBL history. If injury-free, these two men could carry an inexperienced Scorchers side all the way again.
At 37, veteran Michael Klinger is the highest run-scorer in BBL history and has put aside commitments with the WA Shield side to concentrate specifically in preparing for the game’s shortest version.
Last season, Mitchell Johnson was the outstanding bowler of the competition, taking 13 wickets at an average of 15. It was his economy rate which was simply awesome, however, going for only 5.91 an over, the only seamer that went at less than six runs per over.
Bet with Sportsbet on the Big Bash until 31st December and if your top team runscorer bet reaches 50, they’ll pay you out regardless of the result. With Michael Klinger in the Scorchers side, you should win more often than you lose!
