Andres Iniesta – Australian Soccer’s Biggest Ever Transfer?

by Ken Edwards, 14 May 2018

Moves are afoot to bring Barcelona legend and Spanish World Cup Winning Player, Andres Iniesta, to the A-League. In what amount to arguably the biggest news and largest transfer in Australian Soccer History, Iniesta is poised to turn his back on a big offer from China and choose to play in Australia instead.

If Football Federation Australia (FFA) can pull off a contract with Andrés Iniesta’s management it will undoubtedly be the biggest and best news that Soccer in Australia has ever received, perhaps even bigger than qualifying for four straight World Cups.

The news comes after four Australian clubs flagged their desire to use a new $3 million war chest for marquee player transfers that was announced last week to assist in bringing big-name players to the A-League from next season.

Sydney FC, Melbourne Victory, Newcastle Jets and Western Sydney Wanderers are believed to be the clubs who will be in the market for recognised name players next season, including Iniesta.

Andres Iniesta’s Football Resume’

  • La Liga Titles: 9
  • UEFA Champion League Titles: 4
  • FIFA World Cup Champion 2010
  • European Championship titles 2008 & 2012
  • Goal Scorer World Cup Final 2010

Iniesta – The best player ever to consider the A-League?

Many remember the deft touches and goal scoring ability that Alessandro Del Piero brought to the Australian game. Iniesta is in another class above that altogether. He is the man who splits defences wide open with classy passes and an ability to beat players one-on-one with dribbling skills that we’ve not seen on Australian shores before.

Let’s hope the FFA can make it happen and our laid-back Aussie lifestyle can win Iniesta over. Australian Soccer needs a player of his quality.
