NRL 2023 Round 24

With just four rounds to go, there are still just two games which separate sixth place from 12th on the NRL ladder, while spots in the bottom half of the top four are still well and truly up for grabs, too. This week, a number of teams face matchups which may very well decide their season. Among the biggest of them include a Friday night clash between the Broncos and Eels, a Saturday afternoon game which the Rabbitohs must win against the Dragons, and a huge fourth vs fifth matchup between the Storm and the Raiders on Sunday. We’ve previewed all eight games set to take place across the course of the weekend below.

Manly Sea Eagles vs Penrith Panthers

The Sea Eagles blew a fantastic opportunity to jump inside the top eight last weekend, going down 26-16 to a struggling Roosters outfit in a game in which a win would have seen them move to eighth position. They remain right in finals contention, just half a game outside of that top eight, but with a game against the Panthers to come this weekend they will have a tough time remaining as close. The Panthers are, to put it mildly, looking scary. Their demolition of the Storm last weekend was their sixth successive win, and took their cumulative score over the past two weeks to 54-6 against two top eight teams. Defensively, they are so far and away the best team in the league that it isn’t even funny, and they’re doing more than enough to get it done at the other end of the field. The Sea Eagles are playing better than many expected without Tom Trbojevic, but nobody looks capable of stopping Penrith at the moment, and certainly not Manly.

Cronulla Sharks vs Gold Coast Titans

Just when the Sharks’ season appeared to be unravelling after three consecutive losses, they put in their best performance in a long time, knocking off the Rabbitohs 26-16 to remain firmly entrenched in the top eight. With the win they’re now a game and a little bit of points difference ahead of the Eels in ninth, while in the other direction they’re also just a game outside of the top four. They are perilously placed to say the least, and every win from here on in will be vital in their quest for a second consecutive finals appearance – and potentially a second consecutive double chance. They will be confident in their ability to record one this weekend. The Titans have certainly shown some improvement this year and for a long time were right in the hunt to play finals, but a series of close losses over the past month or so have thrown their chances out the window. They were once again relatively competitive last week, taking it right up to a Warriors team which is increasingly looking like a legitimate threat this year, but fell short by ten points to put them two games out of the top eight. The five losses in their past six games to put finals all but out of reach must be deflating, and against a Sharks team which, in contrast, has everything to play for, a win for the home side here looks the likely result.

Brisbane Broncos vs Parramatta Eels

The Broncos have been impressive all season, but they appear to be hitting their best form right when it matters most. After four consecutive wins they were always going to need to play at a high level to knock off the Cowboys in Townsville, and they absolutely did that, getting the job done easily against a team which has been displaying form which is as good as nearly anyone in the league over the past couple of months. That 30-14 victory kept them on pace with the Panthers and two games clear in the top two, so barring things going completely wrong in the last month of the home and away season they should be able to lock in a home Qualifying Final. The Eels, meanwhile, only just crept over the line against the Dragons last week with a 26-20 win in a game which they desperately needed to win. Impressive it was not,  but they got the job done to keep themselves smack bang in the middle of the heated battle for the last few spots in the finals. They’re out of the eight only on points difference and are just a game from sixth, but equally there are three other teams within a game below them. Whether they win or lose will have a drastic impact on their ladder position heading into next week and likely on their overall prospects of playing finals, so expect them to come out swinging. Unfortunately, despite their season being on the line for weeks they are playing some pretty average footy at the minute, in contrast to the Broncos. Brisbane should be able to keep their winning streak alive in this one.

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs St. George Illawarra Dragons

The Rabbitohs remain one of the Premiership favourites, but they’re not exactly making things easy for themselves and still have a fair bit of work to do to lock up a spot in the finals. Last weekend, they went down by ten points on their home turf to a Sharks team which had lost three games in a row, making it three losses in four games for the Bunnies and shoving them right down to the very bottom of the top eight. They’re tied for points with both the Eels in ninth and the Cowboys in tenth, and it’s only courtesy of a slightly superior points difference that they find themselves still inside the eight. Fortunately for them, they have a game which it’s very hard to see them losing this weekend against the Dragons. The Dragons have, in fairness, remained relatively competitive throughout the course of the season and nearly made it two from two last week in a tight game against the Sea Eagles, but the fact remains that they’re the second bottom side in the league and have won on just five occasions all year. The Rabbitohs might not be playing at their best, but they really need a win and should be able to notch it up pretty easily on Saturday afternoon.

Wests Tigers vs New Zealand Warriors

It’s been two and a half months since the Tigers last recorded a victory, but they went very close last weekend against a Raiders team which just keeps winning close games. Given they have not a whole lot left to play for over the remaining few games of the season that was a positive effort, but they will have to repeat that and then some to go close to the Warriors this weekend. New Zealand just keeps on winning, last weekend notching up their fourth in a row with a ten point defeat of the Titans. With the Storm losing, they’re now a game clear in third spot, and are essentially two clear inside the top four – though the Raiders are just a game behind, the Warriors’ points difference is close to 200 superior. A double chance is no longer just a prospect for them, it’s an expectation, and with a very friendly draw to come it would take something of a meltdown for them to miss out. It all begins with a game against the worst side in the league this weekend – expect them to make the most of it.

Sydney Roosters vs The Dolphins

These two sides met in Round 1 of this year, the Dolphins first ever game, with the Roosters expected to be one of the major contenders to the Panthers for the flag and the Dolphins widely tipped to finish last. The Dolphins won in a result which in hindsight has proved to be somewhat reflective of the erroneous expectations placed on both these teams prior to the season beginning. The Dolphins will, in the end, finish in the bottom few spots on the ladder, but they’ve well and truly exceeded expectations and were it not for a couple of very tight losses the last two weeks could still be right in the finals conversation. The Roosters, meanwhile, have been nowhere near where they expected to be, though a win against the Sea Eagles last weekend has kept their very faint finals flame flickering for another week. They’ll need everything to go right though; they are just a game outside of the top eight, but their terrible points difference means it’s essentially two and they’ll likely need to win every game for the rest of the season to jump into the eight. They’re no certainty of getting the job done this weekend – the Dolphins were just a couple of points away from beating a very in-form Knights team last weekend – but with their season on the line and some key names gradually making their way back into the team, they can get the job done on their home turf.

Melbourne Storm vs Canberra Raiders

What a big one this is to kick off Sunday’s NRL action. The Storm and the Raiders currently sit side by side in fourth and fifth, meaning this game will have a huge say in their respective dreams of making the top four. But while they both share a 12-8 record, their points difference is more reflective of where they are both at. The Storm have been trading wins for losses the past six weeks, but given two of those losses were against the Panthers they can probably be forgiven – though a 26-6 loss last week showed both that they are a little way off the pace, and just how far ahead of the chasing pack the Panthers are. The Raiders actually have a better record in that time, winning four of their last six, but indicative of their season all of those wins have been very tight ones. They’ve demonstrated an incredible ability to get the job done in tight finishes this year, last week being no exception, but a 22-18 win over the Tigers is nothing to write home about and demonstrated the fact that their -74 points difference is more indicative of where they’re at than their 12-8 record. This season could easily have gone a lot worse for them had they not so consistently won seemingly 50-50 games, and though they deserve some credit for winning those close ones, the number of times they’ve just crept over the line against average teams does not bode particularly well for their ability to compete in September. A win here would, realistically, be a pretty big surprise, and the Storm should be able to get the job done in Melbourne.

Newcastle Knights vs Canterbury Bulldogs

A few short weeks ago the Knights appeared to be virtually no chance of playing finals, but they’re now officially inside the top eight and looking like they’ll be very difficult to dislodge now that they’re there. They continued their winning ways last weekend with a fifth consecutive victory, and though the Dolphins gave them a big scare they walked away with a 30-28 win nonetheless. They’re playing some really good footy, and with a couple of winnable games and a couple of 50-50 ones to come their fortunes are now in their own hands. It needs to start with a win against the Bulldogs, and it should. Canterbury are actually coming off a win in their last game and two in their last four – including one against the Rabbitohs – so they can’t be written off, but after a bye and with not much to play for over the remaining few weeks of the season it’s hard to see them toppling a team with as much momentum as what the Knights have at the moment. If Newcastle plays the way that they have been, they should certainly be too good in this one.
