NRL 2023 Round 15

After an abridged Round 14 to help ease the pain of the State of Origin series opener, we’re back to a full slate of games this weekend, and there are plenty of good ones on the agenda. After a slow start with a Titans vs Tigers matchup, Friday night should see a couple of close games in the form of the Raiders vs the Warriors and the Dolphins vs the Sea Eagles. Things kick up a notch on Saturday night when the Roosters host the Panthers in a huge game, before the Storm host the Sharks in another big clash between Premiership hopefuls. Read on for a detailed look at each of the eight games set to take place over the course of Round 15.

Gold Coast Titans vs Wests Tigers

I can think of more exciting ways to start a round of football than this, but hey – at least it might be close. The Titans and the Tigers currently sit in 13th and 16th respectively, but while the home side has had a better year overall to date, it’s the visitors who enter the clash in better form. After bolting out to a 5-4 start to the year, the Titans have lost three games in a row, and their often suspect defence has been leaking like a sieve during that time. They gave up 46 points to the Rabbitohs last weekend, the second time they’ve given up such a score in a matter of three weeks. The Tigers certainly won’t pose as significant a threat as what the Bunnies did, but they are looking a whole lot better now than they were a few weeks ago. After finally opening their account after seven consecutive losses with a bizarre win over the Panthers, the Tigers won two of their next three before last week only going down to a Raiders team which can’t stop winning close games by a solitary point. Back at 3-9 and in 16th place they’re not exactly pushing for a finals spot, but they are playing like a team which is more than capable of competing with a large portion of sides in the league at the moment. This will be a grim loss for the Titans if they can’t get the job done, but the way the Tigers are playing it’s very easy to see an upset occurring.

Canberra Raiders vs New Zealand Warriors

After a slow start, this is quickly turning into a very memorable season for the Canberra Raiders. Following their victory last weekend against the Tigers they’ve now won seven of their last eight to fly into sixth place, but jeez – it could have been very different. Each of those seven victories has been by eight points or less, with an average of less than five points separating them from their opponents in those games. Incredibly, their points differential over the past eight weeks is +5, despite the fact that their record is 7-1. Still, winning is winning, and they’ve been doing exactly that. The Warriors, meanwhile, are beginning to find some winning form of their own after a poor run, with their impressive 30-8 victory over the Dolphins last week their second in three weeks. That saw them stay in the top eight for the time being, taking their record to 7-6 and leapfrogging the Dolphins team that they beat. They’ve become a relatively reliable team and are well and truly in this game this weekend. Basically all of the Raiders’ recent games have been close regardless of opposition, but this one in particular looks set to go down to the wire. But the Raiders just keep winning, and on their home turf can make it eight wins from their last nine games.

Manly Sea Eagles vs The Dolphins

Another tough one to pick follows later on Friday night, with the tenth placed Sea Eagles hosting the eighth placed Dolphins at 4 Pines Park. The Sea Eagles’ recent struggles continued last week as they went down 28-18 following an impressive victory the week prior, making it four losses from their past five games. Importantly for them, however, Tom Turbo has been cleared to play this week, giving them a big boost against a Dolphins side who they will see themselves as capable of beating if they play at their best. The Dolphins are still hanging on to a spot in the top eight courtesy of a topsy turvy few weeks which has seen them alternate wins with losses, with last week’s result a disappointing 30-8 defeat at the hands of the Warriors after a strong win the week prior. They’ll be hoping that trend continues this week, though if last week is anything to go by they might struggle. Still, this is a relatively consistent team which plays smart, predictable rugby league under Wayne Bennett, something which can’t be said for the Sea Eagles. Manly haven’t been anything to write home about on their home turf this year, and at long odds the Dolphins look like providing a bit of value this weekend.

St. George Illawarra Dragons vs South Sydney Rabbitohs

The Dragons’ season is going largely as expected; they currently sit in last spot on the ladder after the Tigers recent run of wins, with a record of 3-10 and a points differential of -67. They have, however, been reasonably competitive over a tough stretch of late – three weeks ago they beat the Roosters, while last week they were right with the Panthers until late in the game. This weekend, they have another tough matchup, and despite their competitiveness of late it’s hard to see this game not ending up with another Rabbitohs victory. After establishing themselves as the Panthers’ biggest threat for the flag with a scintillating few weeks, the Bunnies dropped a couple in a row to the Eels and the Raiders. But they bounced back in kind last week, putting up 46 points on the Titans in a high-scoring affair to return to the winners’ list. They might not quite hit that number again this weekend, but they shouldn’t have any problems getting the job done against the bottom placed side in the league.

Brisbane Broncos vs Newcastle Knights

The Broncos still have a lot to prove, having lost three of four games throughout late April and May once their fixture got really tough. But after returning to some semblance of form with a close win against the Warriors two weeks ago, they put in their best showing for weeks against the Sharks last weekend. That 20-12 win was really their first against a genuine Premiership contender, and helped to ease, at least to some extent, the question marks surrounding them. They will remain until they can prove they’re capable of being more consistently competitive against the best in the business, but for the time being they’re sitting in second place and probably feeling pretty happy with themselves. They haven’t had any trouble beating the teams they should beat so far this year, and that should continue this weekend when they welcome the Knights to Suncorp Stadium. The Knights have been in reasonable enough form and looked strong against the Sea Eagles last weekend, but they’ve really struggled away from home this year, where they’re 1-4. The Broncos in Brisbane is one of the toughest road trips in the NRL right now, and will likely be a bridge too far for the Knights.

Sydney Roosters vs Penrith Panthers

In a round filled to the brim with tight matchups, this one shapes up as one of the most entertaining. The Roosters have been widely expected to be one of, if not the, biggest competitors to the Panthers this year, but though it hasn’t quite worked out that way they still have the potential to cause a lot of damage later in the year. They’ve been in dreadful form of late, losing three games in a row prior to last weekend, but though they weren’t at their best against the Bulldogs they did finally manage to get the chocolates with a tense one-point win. Could that be the result they needed to turn their form around? They’ll certainly have their work cut out backing it up this weekend, but perhaps a tough matchup is exactly what they need. The Panthers will certainly provide exactly that. They continued on their winning ways in an unconvincing win over the Dragons, but they don’t really need to be convincing at this time of year and with six guys backing up from Origin, they can be forgiven for being a little bit off. This week, and against a far better team, expect them to put forward a much better performance. If the Roosters can bring their best this should be a fantastic game, but while that best is capable of at least challenging the Panthers, given their recent form it’s hard to tip them against the nominal Premiership favourites, even on their home turf.

Melbourne Storm vs Cronulla Sharks

Another blockbuster matchup kickstarts Sunday’s action, with two Premiership hopefuls in the Storm and the Sharks going head to head at AAMI Park. They sit fifth and fourth respectively, and enter the game with a very similar run of form behind them. In fact, over the past five weeks their results have exactly mirrored one another, each reading win, loss, win, win, loss over that period. The Storm’s loss last weekend was a bit of a disaster, a 25-point drubbing at the hands of the Cowboys to break a two-game winning streak. The Sharks’ defeat was a little less disappointing, but nonetheless given the Broncos’ form against good teams they would have been hoping to make it three wins on the trot in that game. Alas, here we are. Both teams now sit at 7-5 in a tight bunch of teams between fourth and, realistically, way back in 14th, so it’s safe to say that wins are at a premium. The Storm haven’t been easy to beat at home this year, where they’re 4-2, but interestingly the Sharks have lost just a solitary game on the road. There isn’t a whole lot separating these two in this matchup, but with their home crowd behind them the Storm might just be able to get the job done.

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Parramatta Eels

Though they haven’t exactly set the world on fire this year, the Bulldogs are hanging around, and had they been able to snatch a win against the Roosters last weekend they would have been just a game out of the top eight. Instead, they went down by a point, taking their record to 5-8 and sending them to 15th place. Still, they’re not all that far away from being in a spot to compete for the top eight, even if they don’t exactly look like a finals team at the moment. They’ll need to start winning soon though, beginning with the Eels this weekend. Parramatta is just a game ahead at 6-7, but their points differential of 52 is the fifth best in the league and is more reflective of where they’re at. They’re still working their way back into things after a tough start to the season, but with two strong wins in their last two games it looks like they might finally be getting back on track. Top four will almost certainly be a bridge too far for the reigning Grand Finalists, but finals still looks very much on the agenda and should be an expectation at this point. They should be too strong for the Bulldogs this weekend.
