Yastremska has struggled for form after reaching the Australian Open semi finals in January. She held a 5-8 record on the WTA tour before today. She was handed a testing draw against Ajla Tomljanovic who is currently at 207 in the rankings but has been in the top 32 in April 2023. The Aussie has played just one full competitive match in four months after picking up a knee injury in late January.
The No.30 seed battles from one set down to sink the Australian wildcard

Yastremska victorious on the opening day of Roland Garros
A competitive fight from Ajla Tomljanovic as a wildcard was not quite enough to shatter the Ukrainian’s hopes of a deep Roland Garros run
News Insights
- Yastremska wins in three sets
- Yastremska will face Yafan Wang in the 2nd round.
- Tomljanovic had finished just one competitive match in four months before Sunday.
- The Ukrainian will be making her first appearance in the second round at Roland Garros.
Tomljanovic would have been very happy with the start she made in the match with confident service holds and eventually getting the break of serve in the 5th game. She managed to keep hold of her serve and eventually break the Ukrainian again to take the opening set 6-3. It was looking like the World No. 32 was perhaps a bit nervous heading into a tournament which she has never won a first round game in.
The seed was not to be dismissed early in this match as the two went toe to toe in the first six games before eventually Tomljanovic gave up 3 game points to get broken and give Yastremska a 4-3 lead in the second set. Yastremska pounced on the opportunity and wrapped up the set 6-3, heading into a deciding set which saw the Ukrainian heavily odds on to wrap it up.
Tomljanovic was perhaps unprepared to battle out a 2:11 hour match in a Grand Slam against a seeded player. A total of 45 unforced errors came off the racket of Yastremska which massively helped the Aussie who needed as many cheap points as she could get. Finally Yastremska managed to wrap the match up with a 6-3 final set including a 17-point game which secured the break of serve!
