Parramatta Eels vs Dolphins
The Eels have not had a good start to the season, but they have been better over the past fortnight, beating the Tigers by 16 points two weeks ago before losing by ten to the Sharks in Magic Round. They were in that latter game up to their ears, too, still trailing by less than a single score entering the last ten minutes of the game. That loss saw them fall back to last spot, but at least over the last couple of weeks they have avoided being the uncompetitive basket case they were at times over the first couple of months of the season.
The Dolphins, meanwhile, suffered their second consecutive loss after a brilliant win over the Storm, going down by ten points in another high-scoring game against the Roosters. They have been putting up and conceding plenty of points of late, with each of their last three games yielding at least 62 total points, so expect more of the same in this one. This is not a Thursday night game that will likely reach any great heights, but there should at least be plenty of tries. The home side isn’t without a chance, but the Dolphins can come away with a win at decent odds to kick off the round.

Newcastle Knights vs Gold Coast Titans
Thankfully the Knights actually put in a good performance last weekend, because if they hadn’t this would be a game between two teams in the most woefully bad form imaginable. Newcastle had been a disaster for a month prior to Magic Round, averaging just 7.2 points per game during a five-game losing streak. But they turned all that around against the Rabbitohs, putting up 30 while conceding just four in a dominant display that came out of nowhere to net them their third win of the season. They now get a fantastic chance to make it two from two, and take their record to 4-5.
While they started the season reasonably enough, the Titans have been the worst team in the business over the past five weeks, losing every one of those games by a big margin. Ten points is the closest they’ve got in that time while their 20-point loss to the Bulldogs last weekend is their next best effort during a period in which they have lost by an average of 22 points. They’re now down to 16th on the ladder, and the way they are travelling it looks likely they’ll eventually plummet down that final spot into last. This is another game unlikely to reach any great heights and the Titans aren’t out of it based on how the Knights have performed for much of the year, but they gave themselves a much-needed injection of confidence last weekend and can use that as a catalyst for a mini-winning streak.
Predicted Squads
Newcastle Knights: 1. Kalyn Ponga 2. James Schiller 3. Dane Gagai 4. Bradman Best 5. Greg Marzhew 6. Fletcher Sharpe 7. Jack Cogger 8. Jacob Saifiti 9. Phoenix Crossland 10. Leo Thompson 11. South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Brisbane Broncos
The Rabbitohs’ strong start to the season is now well and truly in the rearview mirror after four straight losses, the latest of which saw them pumped 30-4 by a Knights team which had previously been playing as badly as anyone in the league. That makes it two of their last three games in which they’ve been uncompetitive, after they also lost 32-0 to the Bulldogs a couple of weeks earlier. They face another difficult prospect this weekend, and if they play like they have over their last few games they will be in for another hefty defeat.
Having said that, the Broncos are not exactly coming off their best performance either, having been pumped 32-8 by a Panthers team which was sitting dead last on the ladder prior to Round 9. That made it three losses in four games for the Broncos, though the solitary win was a very impressive one two weeks ago when they pumped the Bulldogs 42-18. It’s been a strange old season for the 2023 runners-up, who have not been able to bridge a very large gap between their best and their worst, and that makes them hard to trust. Against the Bunnies in their current form, however, even the Broncos worst would likely be good enough. They shouldn’t have many problems winning this game, and it would be no surprise to see them bounce back from last week’s effort with a big win.
Predicted Squads
South Sydney Rabbitohs: 1. Latrell Mitchell 2. Bayleigh Bentley-Hape 3. Isaiah Tass 4. Campbell Graham 5. Fletcher Myers 6. Jayden Sullivan 7. Jamie Humphreys 8. Jai Arrow 9. Siliva Havili 10. Keaon Koloamatangi 11. Euan Aitken 12. Tallis Duncan 13. Lachlan Hubner Bench: 14. Jye Gray 15. Sean Keppie 16. Davvy Moale 17. Liam Le Blanc Reserves: 18. Tevita Tatola 19. Lewis Dodd 20. Joshua Schuster 21. Shaquai Mitchell 22. Jacob Host
Brisbane Broncos: 1. Selwyn Cobbo 2. Deine Mariner 3. Kotoni Staggs 4. Gehamat Shibasaki 5. Jesse Arthars 6. Ben Hunt 7. Adam Reynolds 8. Patrick Carrigan 9. Billy Walters 10. Payne Haas 11. Xavier Willison 12. Jordan Riki 13. Kobe Hetherington Bench: 14. Cory Paix 15. Corey Jensen 16. Brendan Piakura 17. Fletcher Baker Reserves: 18. Tyson Smoothy 19. Josiah Karapani 20. Martin Taupau 21. Jaiyden Hunt 22. Delouise Hoeter
- The Dolphins last three games have all yielded at least 62 points, while two of the Eels’ last three games have seen 60 or more points scored.
- From their eight games so far this season, the Bulldogs have won seven of them by at least 8 points.
- Storm home games are generally high scoring, thanks largely to their own scoring ability – in four of them this year the average points total is 61, and three of those have yielded at least 54 points.

Canberra Raiders vs Canterbury Bulldogs
Saturday kicks off with a top-of-the-table clash between the Raiders and the Bulldogs, though it’s certainly not your typical 1 vs 2 matchup. The Raiders entered the season as the Wooden Spoon favourites – albeit in a very tight market – but nine games in have well and truly put paid to that idea by winning seven of them. They haven’t just been beating up on bad teams, either – well, they probably had over the past few weeks with successive wins over the Eels, Titans and Dolphin, but last weekend they proved they’re more than capable of also matching it with far better teams when they beat the Storm in a two-point thriller. This week, they face another stern test, this time against the only team that has been better performed than them so far this year.
After winning their first six games, the Bulldogs finally went down to the Broncos a fortnight ago, but they bounced straight back with an easy 20-point win over the hapless Titans. Defensively, they have been the best team in the league by a wide margin, conceding only 118 points all year – for reference, the second lowest number is 166 by the Sharks. They have established themselves as every bit a Premiership contender, something which the Raiders – for all of their impressive performances so far this year – are still attempting to prove. If the home side can win this one, their doubters will really be struggling for ammo, but as good as they have been it’s hard to ignore just how dominant the Bulldogs’ start to the season has been. In an intriguing affair, the visitors can keep the good times rolling with another win.

St. George Illawarra Dragons vs New Zealand Warriors
This is another interesting matchup in what should be an enthralling day of NRL action on Saturday. The Dragons had enjoyed a decent enough start to the season, but two losses in the past two weeks have seen them fall to 3-5. The first of those defeats was really disappointing against the Roosters, but they were solid last weekend against a much-improved Tigers team, fighting back from a 16-point half-time deficit to go down by just six points. Their struggles over that fortnight have largely been at the defensive end, where they have conceded 80 points in two games, and they will be keen to address that problem this Saturday.
Unfortunately for them, the Warriors have been on song in recent weeks, winning three on the trot and putting up a tick over 25 points per game in that time. Their latest win saw them hold off the in-form Cowboys by four points in an entertaining game, a result which took their record to 6-2 and sent them up to second spot on the NRL ladder. Their best form has unequivocally been at home this season, but that was a good win at a neutral venue for Magic Round. They enter this game as only slight favourites, but the visitors are the better team in this game and look like good value to sneak over the line.
Predicted Squads
St. George Illawarra Dragons: 1. Clinton Gutherson 2. Tyrell Sloan 3. Moses Suli 4. Valentine Holmes 5. Corey Allan 6. Kyle Flanagan 7. Lyhkan King-Togia 8. Toby Couchman 9. Damien Cook 10. North Queensland Cowboys vs Penrith Panthers
It was just over a month ago when these two sides last played, and on that occasion the Cowboys got the chocolates on the road in game 2 of what would turn out to be a four-game winning streak. That streak came to an end last weekend, but just barely – they fought back from a bad first half with three consecutive tries early in the second to get to within four points of the Warriors, but that was all she wrote from a scoring perspective. And while the Panthers still find themselves right down the bottom end of the ladder, last weekend might just have been the performance they needed to finally get their season back on track.
The four-time reigning Premiers have just continued to lose, and even after they ended a five-game losing streak with a big win over the Roosters three weeks ago, they went right back to their losing ways with a 16-point defeat to the Sea Eagles the next week. But in Magic Round, they put in easily their best game of the year. They were the unfortunate team to have to ‘host’ the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium for Magic Round, but they did not let that bother them as they destroyed Brisbane in front of their home fans to the tune of 32-8. They remain way back in 15th spot at 3-6, but the season is young and a good few weeks will see them quickly climb back inside the top eight. The Panthers of old have returned in dribs and drabs over the past few weeks, and having found some of their best form they can continue on with a strong win over the Cowboys this weekend.
Predicted Squads
North Queensland Cowboys: 1. Scott Drinkwater 2. Robert Derby 3. Jaxon Purdue 4. Viliami Vailea 5. Murray Taulagi 6. Tom Dearden 7. Jake Clifford 8. Jordan McLean 9. Reece Robson 10. Melbourne Storm vs Wests Tigers
The Storm have not had the best couple of weeks, losing two of their last three games, the latest of which saw them go down by two points to the surprising Raiders. Not that they will be all that concerned; they remain at 5-3 and in fourth spot, boasting the second best points difference in the league. And back on their home turf this weekend, they will be expecting to get straight back on the winners’ list – not that it will be as easy against this opposition as it might have been over the past few seasons.
The Tigers have shown dramatic improvement this season, with their off-season acquisitions proving pivotal in their start to the ladder. Already they have won five games, having won just 6, 4 and 4 over their past three, and with two wins on the trot they come into this game with their tails up. Last week, they started brilliantly against the Dragons only to let them back into it, but their improvement was plain to see as they stunted their opposition’s momentum and held on to win by six points. As good as the Tigers have been, however, they have had a couple of games in which they’ve let through a lot of points, and this looms as potentially another one. Hopefully they can hang around and make it competitive, but back at AAMI Park the Storm should be far too strong.
Predicted Squads
Melbourne Storm: 1. Ryan Papenhuyzen 2. Sualauvi Faalogo 3. Grant Anderson 4. Nick Meaney 5. Xavier Coates 6. Cameron Munster 7. Jahrome Hughes 8. Stefano Utoikamanu 9. Bronson Garlick 10. Manly Sea Eagles vs Cronulla Sharks
The Sea Eagles were the solitary team to miss out on Magic Round, with their bye falling last weekend after a pivotal win over the Panthers the week prior. That victory ended a three-game losing streak, taking their record to 4-4 two months into the season. It’s no coincidence that the losing streak ended the week Tom Trbojevic returned from injury, as the former Dally M Medallist once again proved for anyone who still needed convincing just how pivotal he is to this team. With him in the line-up they are an entirely different unit, and back on their home turf with Tom Turbo in the team, they’ll enter this game against a team which has been in much better form than them as favourites.
The Sharks have won three of their last four games, bouncing back from a two-point loss over the Tigers a fortnight ago with a ten-point win over the Eels last weekend. That was not exactly the most inspired performance, but they did what they needed to do to take their record into the positive at 5-4. They beat Manly just over a month ago, but that game was in Cronulla and took place without Tom Trbojevic playing, both of which will be major factors in this game. This one could easily go either way and should be a good game to round out the weekend’s action, but fresh off a bye the Sea Eagles can sneak over the line for an important win.
