ATP Number 1, Alcaraz proved his worth to the Queen’s Club crowd last week.Huge expectation was placed on the young Spainard’s shoulders with ticket sales through the roof after the announcement of Alcaraz in the draw. Prior to the tournament a huge question mark was placed on his name due to a lack of experience on grass - just 11 matches in 3 tournaments during his professional career.
Alcaraz was scheduled to take on fellow teen, Holger Rune, on Wednesday and Austrian Dominic Thiem on Friday. Alcaraz opted to withdraw from the tournament, likely allowing his body to recover in time for his first round match. However, it is unlikely that an injury is causing a concern in the Spaniard’s camp.
Alcaraz has been spotted on the grounds of Wimbledon with his backroom staff, including physiotherapist - Juanjo Lopez. Alcaraz’ right thigh received some treatment at the end of the first set in the final against De Minaur last week. That being said, it is a common sight for tennis fans to see Alcaraz with strapping on his thigh, it hasn’t stopped him from becoming the youngest No.1 in the Open Era!
Alcaraz showed no signs of dismay in his post Queen’s title interview, in fact he mentioned that he has a ‘lot of confidence’ heading into Wimbledon. He also acknowledged the crazy statistic of Djokovic winning more matches at SW19 than all of the other Top 20 men’s players combined. This will be the challenge that Alcaraz will be faced with if he will want a ticket to the winner’s party!
