AFL 2021 Semi Finals
AFL 2021 Semi Finals

The Demons and the Power both put in terrific performances in their respective qualifying finals last weekend to stamp themselves as the teams to beat this season, but the four sides set to play in this week’s semi-finals are all more than capable of knocking them off their proverbial perch. The semi-finals start with a huge clash between the Cats and the Giants, to be played on neutral territory in Perth, before Brisbane welcomes the Bulldogs into the Lions’ den the next day. We’ve previewed both of these must-watch games.

Geelong Cats vs GWS Giants

September 3, 7.50pm, Optus Stadium

For the bulk of the 2021 season, the Cats have been among the Premiership favourites if not the outright favourite, while the Giants had to fight and claw their way through the back half of the season just to earn a spot in the finals. Entering the semi-finals, however, the two find themselves on equal footing, heading into what is technically a home game for Geelong but which will, in reality, be played on neutral territory. The Cats are coming off a hugely disappointing loss against Port Adelaide last weekend which continued an extended run of poor performances in the first week of finals, while the Giants were impressive for all of their elimination final against the Swans with the exception of the final stages, but managed to hold on nonetheless. The Cats’ best footy should win them this game – in fact it should win them most – but the Giants head into it having won four games on the trot and with their tails high, though the potential loss of Toby Greene is a significant one. Heading into semi-finals, however, it’s common for us as a football world to overstate results from the week prior while forgetting that the team which lost the qualifying final has been the superior side all year. This game is no exception; despite their poor showing last week, Geelong is the better side in this game and should be able to make their way into an incredible 11th preliminary final in 15 seasons.

Brisbane Lions vs Western Bulldogs

September 4, TBC, Gabba

An extraordinary conclusion to the home and away season saw the Lions leapfrog the Bulldogs into fourth spot after 22 games, and though they lost their first final, the reward for that thrilling Round 23 win is that their semi-final matchup will be played on their home turf, where they’ve lost just two games all year. That alone is enough to see them head into this game as favourite, but they’ll have their hands full if the Dogs’ demolition of the Bombers last week was a sign that the boys from Whitten Oval have recaptured their best form. Virtually all season the Western Bulldogs were a top two side and one of the Premiership favourites, and three poor performances heading into the finals shouldn’t be enough to write them off. At their best they are tough to stop, something they reminded the football world of last week. The Lions, however, are a pretty useful side themselves, and Lachie Neale’s 46 touches last weekend suggests a return to form for the reigning Brownlow Medallist which makes his side even more dangerous. This one could easily go either way, but in front of their home crowd the Lions can sneak over the line.
