AFL 2023 Round 14

Round 14 of the AFL season will see just six games take place as six teams enjoy a week off, but what’s lacking in quantity is more than made up for in quality. It begins with a big matchup between the white hot Power and the Cats on Thursday night, before Saturday plays host to a couple of intriguing games between the Giants and the Dockers, and the Tigers and the Saints. On Sunday, the eyes of the football world will be on the Blues to see whether they can finally turn their form around, but they’ll have their work cut out doing so against an in-form Suns team. Take a look at all of our detailed match previews below.

Port Adelaide Power vs Geelong Cats

What a start to Round 14 this will be. Week on week the Power continue to establish their Premiership credentials, with a 22-point win over the Bulldogs the latest in a streak of wins which has now stretched out to nine games. They’re sitting way out in the top two with the Magpies, and are extremely well position to stay there and subsequently give themselves the opportunity to win through to the Grand Final without having to play away from Adelaide Oval. They’re one of a group of four or five who have established themselves as the runaway Premiership fancies, with that ‘or five’ essentially referring to the team they’re playing this Thursday. The Cats have certainly not been at their best throughout the course of this year and two three-game losing streaks within the first half of the season have made it very hard to make the top four, let alone defend last year’s flag, but on the other side of the coin they’ve had games where they’ve reminded everyone that they can’t be written off just yet. Their latest performance was, incidentally, also a 22-point win over the Bulldogs, after which they’ve enjoyed a week off, so they should be fresh for their trip to Adelaide this weekend. Hopefully, they bring the form they showed against the Bulldogs and not the form they showed for the three weeks prior, and if they do we could be in for a serious. But the Power are just ineffable at the moment. They look so well drilled all over the park, and particularly on their home surface seem very, very difficult to beat. They can make it ten wins in a row with a hard-fought victory this Thursday night.

Brisbane Lions vs Sydney Swans

The Lions and the Swans both entered this year with high hopes, but while Brisbane have firmed as one of the Premiership favourites throughout the course of the year, the Swans have fallen off a cliff after last year’s Grand Final appearance and will need a significant turnaround if they’re to play finals this year. But while this looms as a tough matchup for them, they do at least head north with the Lions seemingly in some poor form. After a loss to the Crows in Adelaide they headed to the MCG to face the Hawks last weekend, but rather than bounce straight back onto the winners’ list as they were expected to, they once again failed at the home of football, where they’ve now won just one of their last 13 games. The Swans, meanwhile, had a two game winning streak come to an end at the hands of the Saints, against whom they lost by 14 points. They’ll now face the unenviable job of playing a second consecutive interstate game, as the Lions did last weekend. And given the way they’ve played for most of this year, it’s hard to see them rising to the challenge. The Lions were really poor last weekend, but they’re a different team on their home surface, and should be able to get back to their winning ways with a relatively comfortable victory on Friday night.

GWS Giants vs Fremantle Dockers

They might be sitting in 14th place, but the Giants have shown plenty of good signs in their first year under new coach Adam Kingsley. They could easily have won their last three games, with an impressive win in Geelong against the Cats followed up by a heartbreaking loss to the Tigers, before they last week bounced straight back with a relatively comfortable win over the Kangaroos. They’ve got a good mix of youth coming through to back up their seasoned veterans, and have enough weapons across the park to challenge most teams on their day. They haven’t really been talked about as a finals team much this year and they probably aren’t, but a win here would put them right in the mix, particularly given it would be against another team likely to be fighting for spots in the bottom part of the eight. The Dockers terrible start to the season put their backs against the wall, though four consecutive wins certainly helped to mitigate that. Unfortunately, they were unable to keep the streak going against a revitalised Tigers’ outfit last weekend. That game offered them a chance to jump into the top eight with a 7-5 record, but instead they squared their ledger at 6-6. There is a clear top four on the ladder at the moment, but every team from fifth through to probably 14th looks capable of filling a spot in the rest of the top eight. These two sides both fit in that category, making this a huge game in the context of each of their seasons. This one could very easily go right down to the wire, but the Giants have been playing excellent footy of late, and on their home turf can earn a pivotal win in a tight game.

  • The Power haven’t lost a game in Adelaide to an interstate team all season.
  • The Tigers are 4-2 over their last six games, with those two losses coming by a combined total of just 11 points.
  • The Blues might have talent, but they’ve also lost eight of their last nine games with their solitary win in that time coming against the Eagles.

Richmond Tigers vs St. Kilda Saints

The intriguing games just keep coming in Round 14, with a Tigers team seemingly poised to make a charge for the top eight over the back half of the season coming up against a St. Kilda side looking to hang onto the spot high up in the eight which they earned through a barnstorming start to the year. The Tigers won their second game in a row last weekend in one of their best performances of the year, coming away from Optus Stadium with a key win over the Dockers. Things got a little closer than they would have liked them to, but throughout the middle stages of the game they played some very good footy, backing up their thrilling victory over the Giants the week prior and putting them within reaching distance of the top eight. The Saints, meanwhile, earned a vital win over the Swans after a disappointing loss to the Hawks the week prior, keeping them in touch with the top four and giving them a buffer over the plethora of teams trying to snatch their spot in the top eight. It goes without saying that this is a huge game for both of these teams. The Saints have typically had the wood over the Tigers even when they were a far inferior team, but they also typically play at Marvel Stadium. Richmond is a much better team at the MCG and are beginning to display some good form; they can get the job done to make it three on the trot and put them right back in the mix to play finals in 2023.

Carlton Blues vs Gold Coast Suns

If a team loses a game largely on the back of inaccuracy, usually it’s not the worst thing in the world, because typically accuracy fluctuates a reasonable amount for week to week. Not so for Carlton. By this stage it’s well established that they have some serious problems getting the ball through the big sticks, having kicked 33.65 over the past five weeks. Partly that’s to do with poor kicking, partly an inability to get easier shots at goal, but regardless the result is that they’ve lost six games in a row and find themselves in 15th place on the AFL ladder in a year in which they were hoping to contend for a flag. Their hopes of playing finals are rapidly diminishing, and a loss this weekend will basically extinguish a flame that is already looking very dim. And, given the way the Suns have been playing, a loss is not particularly hard to envision. Gold Coast’s 25-point win over the Crows prior to the bye was their second in a row and their third in four weeks, taking them to 6-6, with a percentage of exactly 100.00%. They have developed into one of the best contested ball teams in the league and have been translating that strength into results, and increasingly it’s looking like this might be the best incarnation of the Suns that we’ve seen in their thus far underwhelming history. A win this week would potentially push them inside the top eight, putting them well and truly in the mix for what would be their first ever finals appearance. The Blues top-end talent means that it’s always harder than what it should be to tip against them, but I’ve been fooled one too many times this year. Suns in a tight one.

North Melbourne Kangaroos vs Western Bulldogs

After an exciting start with two wins in their opening two games, this year has been a bit of a disaster for the Roos, but though they’ve continued a losing streak which has now stretched to 11 games over the past couple of weeks, they’ve turned a corner in the way that they are playing. A tight loss to the Swans was followed by another tight one to the Bombers, and though they didn’t really look like beating the Giants last weekend they did at least keep it relatively close once again. A win appears to be somewhere around the corner, and the Bulldogs do appear ripe for the picking after three consecutive defeats. It’s a persistent criticism of the Dogs that they’re unable to put their best foot forward often enough, and they’ve done nothing to deter those critics after a disappointing run of matches. None of those losses have been disasters in isolation, but there’s no doubt that they’ve been a little off the past three weeks after appearing to establish themselves as a top four team over the first ten games of the year. At 7-6, their season can still go either way, and a clash with the Kangaroos after three consecutive losses might be a good indicator of which direction it will win from here on in. The Roos’ recent form suggests that they’ll keep this one competitive, but the Bulldogs are still the far better team despite their recent struggles and should be able to get the job done.
