Katrina Gorry called up after injury
After undergoing ankle surgery in April, there was some worry that Katrina Gorry would not be fit enough to play in the Olympics.
She was left out of Australia’s recent friendlies against China on May 31 and June 3. Gorry’s last match for the Matildas was at the 2023 FIFA World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
It was a bit of a shock then when she was included in the Matildas’ 18-player Paris Olympics squad.
Speaking about her return, Gorry said: “I’ve been in full training for the last couple of weeks.” Gorry said this week ahead of the Matildas’ upcoming friendly against Canada on Sunday morning.
“West Ham were really supportive of me being in Sweden and doing my rehab there, so I'm really grateful for that. I did a lot of running sessions by myself, tried to get myself fit and back in the team,” she said this week ahead of the Matildas’ upcoming friendly against Canada on Sunday morning.
“I haven’t missed a beat really, so it’s been really nice to be back and obviously under the care of the national team.
“I was pretty devastated about my injury but so grateful for all the support, and I knew that I could trust my body to get myself back here and I get to do it with my beautiful family as well so I’m feeling good,
“The ankle’s doing really well and I’m just so happy to be back in camp.”
Gorry is one of Australia’s most important players. No player had more tackles than her at the 2023 World Cup.
Matildas’ Olympics Odds
At their best the Matildas are absolutely one of the best women’s teams in the world. Unfortunately, they are not at their best right now. The Matildas are far from favourites to win the Olympics.
Team USA, under the leadership of legendary former Chelsea manager Emma Hayes, lead the Olympics betting odds list. Most betting sites have the USWNT as favourites to win with $3.00 odds or lower.
Next best at most betting apps is Spain ($3.50). La Roja are reigning world champions after winning the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand last year. They also have the current Women’s Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí, who beat out Australia’s Sam Kerr.
France and Germany round out the top two at most soccer betting sites with $6.00 and $12.00 odds to win, respectively.
Australia, meanwhile, are one of the outsiders with $15.00 odds or longer. Given that they are in the US and Germany’s group, most betting sites see this being a very tough tournament for Australia.
The Matildas’ first match is on Friday at 1:00am AEST against Germany at the Orange Vélodrome in Marseille.
