World Cup finalists France kick off their 2024 European Championship campaign on 17 June (18 June, 5:00 AM AEST) against dark horses Austria. Romania take on everyone’s second team Ukraine and Belgium play Slovakia in the other two matches on Monday.

Ukraine To WIN (2.00) | Playup 

Despite going undefeated in Euro Qualifying and finishing atop their group, Romania are coming into this match as big underdogs.  

We’d like to disagree with the soccer betting sites and tell you to back Romania, but we can’t. The talent gap between the Romanians and Ukraine is just too big.  

Ukraine come into this match with Artem Dovbyk, La Liga’s top goalscorer; Mykhailo Mudryk, one of the fastest and most direct players in Europe; and Andriy Lunin, who was Real Madrid’s starting goalie for most of the season.  

We’re not going to overthink this one. Our pick is Ukraine to WIN against Romania.

Slovakia qualified for their third straight Euros after a strong campaign led by mercurial manager Francesco Calzona.  

The Slovakians have a surprisingly solid side with players littered across all of Europe’s top five leagues, including PSG’s Milan Škriniar and Newcastle’s Martin Dúbravka. Up front though, Slovakia are a little thin and rely mostly on Boavista’s Róbert Boženík.  

Belgium, meanwhile, are still clinging on to their Golden Generation with players like Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku, and Jan Vertonghen. 

On paper, Vertonghen at the centre of Belgium’s defence worries us, but we can’t deny the results. The Red Devils have kept a clean sheet in four of their last five Euros group stage matches.  

We’re willing to bet they shut out the Slovaks on Monday too.

Along with England, France comes into this tournament as huge Euro 2024 favourites. Kylian Mbappe, likewise, is leading the Euro betting odds lists to win the Golden Boot and Golden Ball.  
Ignoring Mbappe, France have more firepower than anyone else at this tournament. They’re capable of scoring multiple goals in every match they play in.  

However, as they showed at the 2022 World Cup, France are also vulnerable on the counter attack. Austria, led by Red Bull football architect Ralf Rangnick, are a very good counter attacking side.  

Whether it’s France scoring three goals themselves or Austria chipping in with a couple of goals on the counter, we’re confident this match will have at least three goals.
