Round 6 might have started with a couple of blowouts, but it made up for them with a number of high-quality games over the remainder of the weekend, with the best saved for last when the Cats and Hawks played out yet another classic. Round 7 kicks off with the traditional ANZAC Day Eve clash between the Tigers and Demons – both of whom are coming off good wins – but as always, it’s ANZAC Day itself which will play host to the round’s biggest fixture between the Magpies and Bombers. There are plenty of other quality games littered across the weekend, including the Dockers vs Crows, Giants vs Bulldogs and Blues vs Cats, and you can check out our AFL tips and predictions for all ten of them below.

Melbourne Demons vs Richmond Tigers
This game looks a lot more intriguing than it might have coming into the season. The Tigers, widely expected to finish last after committing to a full rebuild after 2024, have already matched their win tally from last season after they beat the Suns last weekend. The young Richmond outfit will likely still have plenty of underwhelming performances this season, but they have a lot of youngsters seemingly capable of becoming solid AFL players and appear more competitive than most anticipated.
The Demons, meanwhile, have had a much-publicised slow start to the season, but at long last they provided their fans with some hope that perhaps all is not lost just yet with easily their best performance of the year last weekend. Having struggled immensely to find the goals over the first month, they put up 107 points to beat the Dockers by ten points and notch their first win of the year. But was that a sign of a return to form, or did it simply paper over the cracks? Another loss would see the criticism rapidly return, and they can ill afford to take the plucky young Tigers lightly. Richmond performed well in their only other blockbuster game under lights this year back in Round 1, and at good odds with Australian betting sites they are capable of causing another upset.

Collingwood Magpies vs Essendon Bombers
The traditional ANZAC Day clash has delivered plenty of big moments and quality games over the years, and 2024’s edition was one of the best of them. That one ended in a draw and included one of the game’s great marks when Jamie Elliott took to the sky, but while the significance of this matchup does seem to bring these two sides closer, it’s hard to imagine the Bombers getting as close this time around. The Magpies are sitting on top of the ladder after a fifth straight win last weekend, and it wasn’t just any old win – it was a shellacking of the previously undefeated reigning Premiers, and in Brisbane no less.
The Bombers, meanwhile, have won three on the trot themselves and the first two of those were pretty impressive, though they wouldn’t exactly have been thrilled with their two-point defeat of the Eagles last weekend. Given how well the Pies are playing, if Essendon plays like they did last Sunday they won’t get close in this one, though their previous two performances should give some hope they’re capable of at least keeping things interesting. But the Maggies are playing better than any other team in the league right now, and should be able to record another ANZAC Day victory.

Fremantle Dockers vs Adelaide Crows
Games between two non-Melbourne clubs don’t always get the attention that they deserve, but this is as intriguing a matchup as there is all weekend. The Dockers have, at times this season, looked like the quality team that they probably should be, and after three wins on the trot prior to last weekend looked to be getting back on track after a couple of losses to start the year. Unfortunately, they then went and lost to the previously winless Demons, taking their record to 3-3 following a somewhat erratic start to the year.
In complete contrast, the Crows bounced back from a couple of tight losses with a really strong win over the Giants which demonstrated that they have more strings to their bow than just winning high-scoring shootouts. They remain the highest scoring team in the league by some margin, but certainly not due to last weekend’s grind, a rain-affected clash which they won 52-34. That was a really impressive win against a tough opposition, but over in Perth they will again be forced to fight very hard for the four points. This is a clash between two teams trying to establish themselves as contenders and could easily go down to the wire, but on their home turf, the Dockers can bounce back with a tight win.

- Rain is forecast all day for the ANZAC Day clash, and if BOM proves correct it will likely be a low-scoring game.
- The Swans have beaten the Suns four of the last five times they have played by an average margin of more than 53 points. Gold Coast might be improved and Sydney not at their best, but the visitors are still the better team and look way overs.
- The Saints have been in plenty of high-scoring games this season, with five of their six so far this season yielding at least 183 points. Meanwhile, two of the Lions’ last three have seen over 200 points scored. On the fast-paced Marvel Stadium deck, this contest should see plenty of points.

St. Kilda Saints vs Brisbane Lions
The Saints have had some good moments over the first few weeks of the season, but last weekend’s clash against the Bulldogs did not have many of them. Following another loss the weekend before in which they were simply outclassed by a superior opponent in the Giants, St. Kilda rolled over meekly against an impressive Bulldogs outfit, ultimately losing by 71 points. It doesn’t get any easier for them this weekend against the Lions.
Having said that, Brisbane are not exactly coming off their best performance either. They were battered from pillar to post by the Magpies, recording their first loss of the year in emphatic fashion. And while they sit at 5-1, their start has not been as good as that record would suggest, with a percentage of 105. 1% indicative of a lot of tight wins. But still, slow starts following a Premiership are not all that common, and that they’ve managed to still squeeze five wins out of their first six games is testament to their quality. The Saints are not without a chance in this game, but the Lions are the better side and can eke out a hard-fought win at Marvel.

Port Adelaide Power vs North Melbourne Kangaroos
Both of these teams have had their fair share of criticism so far this season, but while the Power appear to have responded strongly to it, things have only got worse for the Kangas over the last few weeks. Consecutive defeats to the Saints and Bombers had the Power in dire straits with games against the Hawks and then the Swans in Sydney to come, but they promptly went and won both of them to get their season back on track. They have played some excellent footy over the past couple of weeks, and now back on their home ground against much weaker opposition they should be looking for a comfortable victory.
There was plenty of optimism at Arden Street after the Roos’ solid first three weeks, but that has quickly wilted after three dreadful performances in a row. The footy world does have a tendency to overreact and there is still plenty of young talent at North Melbourne, but they do appear to be a little less advanced than many thought after their first fortnight. There has been a big gap between the Power’s best and worst this season and if they don’t show up, the Kangaroos could at least make them work for their spoils. But these two teams have been trending in opposite directions over the past fortnight, and this should be an easy win for the home team.

Greater Western Sydney Giants vs Western Bulldogs
In a round with plenty of intriguing games, this one is probably the best of them. The Giants and the Bulldogs, somewhat strangely, have not had the same result on the same weekend for the last five weeks, GWS winning three and losing two and the Doggies going 2-3 in that time. The Giants are coming off a loss in a slog against the Crows, but against the free-flowing Bulldogs this game will not likely bear similarities to their last.
The Doggies, after consecutive losses, were brilliant last week against the Saints, with skipper Marcus Bontempelli not skipping a beat in his return. Unfortunately, the win came at a cost as star young forward Sam Darcy injured his knee, and though he avoided an ACL rupture as was initially feared, he will still spend some time on the sidelines. His loss is a big one, but this team has played some excellent footy this season and at least in my eyes, deserves credit as a genuine contender. Their best is excellent and though they’re only 3-3, they have not yet put in a poor performance this year. This one should be close, and away from home the talented Doggies can cause an upset in a high-quality and high-scoring game.

Gold Coast Suns vs Sydney Swans
There has been plenty of buzz around the Gold Coast Suns after four consecutive wins to start this season, but hasn’t that abated after last week’s effort. Three of those first four wins came against the teams currently occupying the bottom three spots on the ladder, and after being unable to get the chocolates against Dimma’s old side – which is now very young – their draw gets substantially harder. With games against the Swans, Lions, Bulldogs and Hawks over the next month, their season could quickly turn pear-shaped, and it will be interesting to see how they fare against just their second genuinely dangerous opponent this season.
Having said that, the Swans have not exactly been at their blistering best to start the season, and last weekend’s home loss to the Power took their record to 2-4. They are taking a little time to adjust to life under Dean Cox, but while they haven’t been at their best they could easily have snatched a couple more wins, and if they had the conversation around them would be very different. The respective records of these two teams are not reflective of where either of them is at, and while the Suns have been tough to beat at home in recent times, last year’s Grand Finalists look like terrific value with betting sites to do it.

Carlton Blues vs Geelong Cats
Notwithstanding their first round loss to the Tigers, the Blues’ winless first month was not nearly as bad as it looked, with three close losses to good teams, and lo and behold with a couple more palatable matchups they have started to hit their straps. No one will be getting too excited over wins against the Eagles and Kangaroos, but Carlton have won those two games by a collective 153 points and given what is no doubt a talented team – at least at the top-end – a serious injection of confidence. That confidence will be much-needed this weekend.
Geelong, as always, has continued to turnover their list on the fly, and after finishing top four last season appear destined to once again compete at the pointy end of the 2025 season. Their only two losses have each been by less than ten points, and in their last three weeks they have pumped the Demons then beaten both the Crows (in Adelaide) and last week the Hawks on Easter Monday. The latter of those was a really high-quality game, with Patrick Dangerfield again taking the game by the scruff of the neck in his new role as a near full-time forward. The Blues will be eager to get their first quality scalp of the season, but while they have the top-end talent to go with the Cats, they are not as good as a collective. If they can translate their form against meek opposition to this game it could be a close one, but it’s hard to tip against Geelong in their current form.

Hawthorn Hawks vs West Coast Eagles
After a brilliant start to the season, the Hawks have lost two in a row, and will welcome the sight of the Eagles in Melbourne this weekend, even if they do have to head to Marvel Stadium for the match. Despite those consecutive losses, Hawthorn still justifiably have high hopes for this season, and last weekend could very easily have snatched the four points against high-quality opposition – something which they will not exactly be facing this Sunday.
The Eagles are now the only winless team left in the league, though they went heartbreakingly close to avoiding that tag against the Bombers. Maybe heartbreaking is too strong a word, but for a team which has been winning as rarely as this one over the past few weeks, opportunities for four points don’t come around all that often. With the Tigers winning a couple of unexpected games West Coast is now the firm favourite for the Wooden Spoon, and looks likely to be on the end of plenty more big losses in Andrew McQualter’s first season as coach. This will most likely be one of them, with the Hawks looking to get their season back on track with a hefty win.
