After years of planning and deliberations, ICC finally decided to start a World Test Championship in August of 2019. While there has been a World Cup for the limited-overs formats for ages, there was none for the longest format of the game.

WTC or the World Test Championship was introduced as the premier championship for Test cricket. The first cycle of this championship was from 2019 to 2021 with India and New Zealand being the finalists of the first edition. The Blackcaps came out on top as they defeated India at Southampton to be crowned as the World Test Champions in the first-ever edition of the WTC.

The points system has changed for the second edition of the WTC.

In the first edition, each Test series was worth 120 points and a single Test match in a 5-match series was worth 24 points whereas a single Test in a two-match series would account for 60 points.

However, for the WTC 2021-2023 cycle, the points a team would gain for winning a Test match are now uniform.

Irrespective of the length of the Test series, a team would gain 12 points for winning a Test match according to the new points system.

Who will win WTC 2021-2023?

Australia

The Aussies will face England, South Africa, and West Indies at their home turf. There haven’t been many teams who have defeated Australia in Australia in recent times except India. Pat Cummins and his team are in for a good home season in the WTC cycle. Their biggest challenge will be on their tour of Pakistan and India.

Bangladesh

Bangladesh have defeated New Zealand on the latter’s soil for the first time in history. And this will have boosted their confidence going ahead into the WTC. Some of their biggest challenges in this WTC edition will be India at home and South Africa and West Indies away from home. It will be a very challenging road to the finals for Bangladesh in a table that features very competitive sides.

England

England are going through what can be considered the worst phase of English Test cricket. Not only have they lost the Ashes down under, but they also lost it in a humiliating way. Talking of humiliating defeats, they were handed a few by India at Lord’s at the start of the second edition of WTC. With Pakistan and West Indies being their next away destinations, England’s chances of making it to the WTC final in 2023 are bleak.

India

The runners-up of the first edition of the World Test Championship, India have started the second edition with some phenomenal wins both at home and away venues. There are many positives for Virat Kohli’s team in terms of bench strength, form, and consistency of their bowling attack. While India continues to dominate the opposition in this format of the game, their senior middle-order batters, Rahane and Pujara are the only concern going ahead.

New Zealand

The defending champions haven’t got the start they would have wished for in this edition of the WTC. After a big loss against India in Mumbai, the Blackcaps suffered a defeat at the hands of Bangladesh at home in a 2-match Test series. The road ahead is paved with some big challenges such as the tour of Pakistan. Though there are opportunities for wins at home against South Africa and Sri Lanka and the away series against England, New Zealand will need to pull themselves up and find the momentum to successfully defend the WTC title.

Pakistan

After a long wait, Pakistan will finally host a Test series at their home. They will back themselves to dominate the visiting Australia, England, and NZ sides while being the favorites against West Indies and Sri Lanka on the away tour. Pakistan’s home season will be the one to watch out for as it will make a big impact on the WTC standings.

South Africa

Dean Elgar-led Proteas have shown great courage and strength against India in the Test series at home. Nevertheless, their away tours are against tough teams in challenging conditions. South Africa has a long way to go before they can claim a spot in the WTC final.

Sri Lanka

While Sri Lanka have started off their WTC cycle with 2 wins from their 1 series and have accumulated 100% of the points available, they are less likely to sit at number 1 in the points table for a long time. Facing Australia at home will be an opportunity for Sri Lanka to show their mettle while the Pakistan series will be a tough challenge at home. Sri Lanka’s chances of qualifying for the final aren’t high given the tough opposition they will face both at and away from home.

West Indies

Once the most feared cricket team in the world, West Indies have struggled to live up to the expectations in recent years. Their struggles within the team are plenty, whether it’s on-field or off the field. Their big losses against Sri Lanka in their away series have been a huge blow at the start of their WTC and looking at their current form and team strength, it’s less likely the Men in Maroon can make it to the final.
