After years of planning and deliberations, ICC finally decided to start a World Test Championship in August of 2019. While there has been a World Cup for the limited-overs formats for ages, there was none for the longest format of the game. WTC or the World Test Championship was introduced as the premier championship for Test cricket. The first cycle of this championship was from 2019 to 2021 with India and New Zealand being the finalists of the first edition. The Blackcaps came out on top as they defeated India at Southampton to be crowned as the World Test Champions in the first-ever edition of the WTC.
