The tournament has seen six different winners in the past ten seasons. It has been fairly competitive, attracting new players from around the world every year and increasing competition. It is difficult to pick up a winner at the start of the season as every team starts fresh with a bunch of young and experienced players. But digging into the past performances can give us some insight into the capabilities of each of the eight teams and their potential to bag the title this season.
# Adelaide Strikers Women
From back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023, the Adelaide Strikers Women had to bite the dust last season, finishing 7th on the points table. They managed to win only 3 of their 10 games and never regained the momentum we had seen in previous seasons. Tahlia McGrath would like to put last season's upset behind her and lead from the front. The team will look to make a good start this season and set the ball rolling. Megan Schutt, Laura Wolvaardt, Amanda-Jade Wellington, Sophie Ecclestone, and Jemma Barsby are key players and shall look to do well this season. They have a good balance in their batting and bowling, and shall start as one of the teams to watch out for.
Squad – Tahlia McGrath (c), Jemma Barsby, Tammy Beaumont, Darcie Brown, Sophie Ecclestone, Anesu Mushangwe, Bridget Patterson, Madeline Penna, Megan Schutt, Amanda-Jade Wellington, Laura Wolvaardt
# Brisbane Heat Women
It was a heartbreaking loss for the Brisbane Heat Women last season. They were consistent in the league stage and finished second on the points table. However, the team lost in the final by a narrow margin against the Melbourne Renegades Women. They have won the title twice in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons and aim for their third this year. Jess Jonassen takes over as the skipper from Georgia Redmayne and looks to lead from the front. The team has a strong batting lineup and shall leverage this advantage. Jemimah Rodrigues, Grace Harris, and Nadine de Klerk will be the players to watch out for. The bowling attack doesn't look all that convincing, and Jonassen must put her weight behind others and do well for the team.
Squad – Jess Jonassen (c), Lily Bassingthwaighte, Bonnie Berry, Lucy Bourke, Nadine de Klerk, Sianna Ginger, Lucy Hamilton, Nicola Hancock, Grace Harris, Chinelle Henry, Charli Knott, Grace Parsons, Georgia Redmayne, Jemimah Rodrigues
# Sydney Sixers Women
The Sixers have had poor tournaments by their standards in the last two seasons. They finished 6th on the points table and didn't qualify for the playoffs. They have been the most consistent team, playing in the final five times and winning the title twice. Ellyse Perry is the new skipper this season, and she would like to see the team achieve its past glory and win the title for the first time since 2003. They have the right balance in batting and bowling, and shall start as one of the favorites to win the tournament. Ashleigh Gardner, Alyssa Healy, Amelia Kerr, and Maitlan Brown are big match players who will look to do well for the franchise.
Squad – Ellyse Perry (c), Caoimhe Bray, Maitlan Brown, Lauren Cheatle, Sophia Dunkley, Ashleigh Gardner, Alyssa Healy, Elsa Hunter, Amelia Kerr, Courtney Sippel, Mady Villiers, Elsa Hunter
# Perth Scorchers Women
The Scorchers Women had a poor season in 2024. The 2021-22 title winners started well but couldn't maintain the momentum and look to add another jewel to their crown this season. Sophie Devine continues as skipper this season and aims to inspire confidence in the team. While the team may be short of batting firepower compared to their opponents, they compensate with a strong bowling attack that can test any opponent. Beth Mooney, Alana King, Paige Scholfield, and Lilly Mills would aim to inspire the youngsters at the camp through consistent performances.
Squad – Sophie Devine (c), Chloe Ainsworth, Maddy Darke, Amy Edgar, Mikayla Hinkley, Ebony Hoskin, Alana King, Katie Mack, Lilly Mills, Beth Mooney, Paige Scholfield, Chloe Tryon
# Sydney Thunder Women
The Scorchers Women reached the Eliminator in the last two seasons but have lost their nerve in crucial games. They have won the title twice, with their last win coming back in 2020-21. Phoebe Litchfield, who takes over as the skipper from Tahlia Wilson, would look to change that. They have a strong batting lineup and a good variety in the bowling attack. With match-winners like Hannah Darlington, Chamari Athapaththu, Shabnim Ismail, Phoebe Litchfield, and Laura Harris in the squad, they will be one of the teams that can clinch the title this year.
Squad – Phoebe Litchfield (c), Chamari Athapaththu, Samantha Bates, Ella Briscoe, Hannah Darlington, Sienna Eve, Hasrat Gill, Laura Harris, Shabnim Ismail, Anika Learoyd, Phoebe Litchfield, Taneale Peschel, Georgia Voll, Tahlia Wilson
# Hobart Hurricanes Women
The Hobart Hurricanes Women have been one of the bottom rankers in this tournament. Apart from reaching the semifinals in the first two seasons, the side hasn't done much to be proud of. Last season, they finished 4th on the points table and didn't make the playoffs. Skipper Elyse Villani would like her players to put these upsets behind them and put up a good show this season. They have experienced players like Heather Graham, Lizelle Lee, Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Linsey Smith, and Ruth Johnston, and expect them to deliver strong performances throughout the season.
Squad – Elyse Villani (c), Nicola Carey, Heather Graham, Ruth Johnston, Lizelle Lee, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Hayley Silver-Holmes, Amy Smith, Lauren Smith, Linsey Smith, Molly Strano, Elyse Villani, Danni Wyatt-Hodge
# Melbourne Stars Women
The Melbourne Stars have been the bottom hunters in the points table. They have the worst record among all teams and finished last in the points table last season, winning only twice in 10 games. Apart from finishing runner-up in 2020-21, the side has never gone beyond the league stage in any other season. They have a habit of making poor starts, which has cost them dearly. Annabel Sutherland, who takes over the captaincy role, will look to turn her team's fortunes and put up strong performances against their more formidable opponents. Marizanne Kapp, Meg Lanning, Georgia Prestwidge, and Kim Garth are experienced players and must do well in the tournament.
Squad – Annabel Sutherland (c), Sophie Day, Kim Garth, Dani Gibson, Ella Hayward, Amy Jones, Marizanne Kapp, Meg Lanning, Rhys McKenna, Ines McKeon, Georgia Prestwidge, Sophie Reid, Annabel Sutherland
# Melbourne Renegades Women
The Melbourne Renegades are the defending champions and made a strong turnaround from their lows in 2023-24. It was a dream season for the team, given how the critics had written them off. Sophie Molineux, who led the team to victory last season, will look to start from where they left off. They have big names like Emma de Broughe, Georgia Wareham, Deandra Dottin, and Alice Capsey, and need a good show from them.
Squad – Sophie Molineux (c), Alice Capsey, Emma de Broughe, Deandra Dottin, Tess Flintoff, Milly Illingworth, Naomi Stalenberg, Georgia Wareham
