Predictions & Betting Tips

UFC 235’s co-main event is a mouthwatering proposition, as Tyron Woodley puts his UFC Welterweight Championship on the line against Kamaru Usman. It’s an intriguing match-up, as the challenger possesses an all-round game that genuinely threatens the champion’s reign.

Woodley is undefeated in his last seven fights, winning six of them. This is the 36-year-old’s fifth title defence, with his most recent coming via submission in the second round against Liverpool’s Darren Till in September. T-Wood showcased his class once again in that fight, and is looking to cement his legacy here in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“The Chosen One” is a master of pinpointing his opponents’ biggest weapons, before disarming them and using it against them. Adaptable and just as comfortable in a dogfight, jiu-jitsu grapple or karate chess match, the problem for Woodley here is that there isn’t a specific way he can look to hurt Usman.

The “Nigerian Nightmare” brings serious brute force to the Octagon this weekend, and is 9-0 since making his UFC bow in 2015. Seven of those wins have come via decision, including each of the last three. That could mean the older champ’s in for a long and testing night.

Usman is a busier fighter than Woodley, with the champion’s inactivity almost costing him in the past. Indeed, the challenger has attempted 7.75 significant strikes per minute in the UFC, landing with 3.93 of those. That’s compared with 5.37 per minute for Woodley, landing 2.62.

Usman needs to keep an eye out for his opponent bursting into life with violent flurries, but the #2 ranked welterweight’s busy style and excellent wrestling skills – which open the door for strikes on the ground – could see him take an early lead on points. If he doesn’t fix that problem, Woodley could find himself needing a knockout if the fight goes to the later rounds. Having said that, the champion has an excellent takedown defence, stopping 95% of attempts.
