River Plate vs Boca Juniors: Predictions, Betting Tips & Odds
Due to an attack, the match has been suspended and delayed to Sunday, November 25th
The Superclasico Copa Libertadores will be decided as River Plate welcome their arch rivals Boca Juniors to El Monumental.
It comes down to this. The last ever two-legged Copa Libertadores final between the two superpowers of Argentinian football. In 58 years of competition there had never been a Superclasico final and now it comes down to a second leg, winner takes all match that will be talked about for years to come.
Even without any fans to cheer them on – due to the ban on visiting supporters in Argentina – River Plate were able to leave La Bombonera happy thanks to an own goal by Carlos Izquierdoz with about half an hour of the match remaining. Ramon Abila had opened the scoring for the home side before Lucas Pratto equalised just minutes later. Dario Bendetti’s header made it 2-1 in first half stoppage time before Boca’s unfortunate defender levelled the tie.
The electrifying atmosphere in La Bombonera is sure to be replicated by River Plate’s fans as they urge their side to win this ultimate local derby. Form usually goes out of the window for games like this and it may well be whichever side is able to keep their head that come out victorious.
River Plate were unstoppable in the group stages of this year’s Copa Libertadores, not losing a match and being particularly successful away from home. They came a little unstuck in the knock out rounds relying on strong second leg performances to see them through. Boca, on the other hand, struggled in the group before rampaging through the sudden death ties scoring a lot of goals in the process. This could go either way but home advantage must surely mean something – River Plate to win this 2-1.
- River Plate to win
Getting a draw at La Bombonera was a great result for River Plate and they could well now use home advantage to devastating effect.
- Both teams to score
With so much passion on display it seems inconceivable that both defences won’t slip up at some point. This tie has had everything and the second leg will continue in that vein.

- Boca Juniors have been the more successful of the two in the Copa Libertadores, winning six titles to River Plate’s three. Their last triumph was back in 2007 however.
- River Plate have not led after the first leg of any of their knock round ties. They have relied on second leg victories – including the dramatic finish against Gremio – to see them through.
- Boca’s Cristian Pavon needs one more goal to become the joint top goal scorer in this year’s Copa Libertadores. Cruzeiro’s Egidio currently tops the table with six.
- River Plate were the last Argentinian side to win the Copa Libertadores when they defeated Mexican side Tigres in 2015.
