The third Clasico of the season is upon as Barcelona look to extend their lead at the top of La Liga at the expense of their Real Madrid rivals.

Barcelona are looking like they will win the league again this season without too much trouble, having topped the table for the majority of the season. Lionel Messi has been the star player – even with his various injuries – and will be looking to grab some more goals at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Things were looking bad earlier in the season for Real Madrid with the 5-1 defeat at the Camp Nou in October seeing Los Blancos drop to ninth in the table – and head coach Julen Lopategui lose his job. The ship has been steadied since then but betting sites have decided a title challenge this season is out of the question, so pride is all they can play for here.

The bookies shortened the odds on a Barcelona championship a long time ago so there is not much value in an outright winner bet. But these games are special and the Madrid faithful would take a victory here – and in the upcoming Copa del Rey semi final second leg – as some consolation.

For all the talk of La Liga being a competition between two clubs, Real Madrid have only won the title twice in the last 10 seasons. A hat trick of Champions League triumphs will have softened that particular blow but Santiago Solari will not want Barcelona to get too used to picking up the league trophy. This fixture is always a big event and this one could end 2-2.

Betting Tips

Total goals over 3.5

With personal and professional pride at stake – as well as three points – this game has all the makings of a real classic. Without a league title to aim for Real Madrid may be more attacking and that could mean a lot of goals.

Draw with goals

With such an array of attacking talent on show it seems inconceivable that there will be no goals scored in Madrid. Add in the desire of two sides desperate not to lose.

Head to Head

Barcelona famously thrashed Real Madrid 5-1 earlier in the season but they also haven’t lost in a league match in the Bernabeu since 2014.

  • Unsurprisingly Lionel Messi is once again the stand out player in La Liga. Not only is he the top goal scorer with 25, he has also provided the most assists.
  • Defender Sergio Ramos is Real Madrid’s third highest goal scorer this season in all competitions. Only Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale have scored more.
  • With their never-ending supply of skilful players it is sometimes forgotten how disciplined the Barcelona players are. The club have only received one red card all season – Clement Lenglet was sent off in the 2-2 draw with Girona in September.
  • Only two players have played in all of Real Madrid’s La Liga matches this season – Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema.
