Predictions & Betting Tips

The interim lightweight title is up for grabs in the main event of UFC 236 this weekend, with the winner in line to face Khabib Nurmagomedov for the undisputed crown when the Russian returns from his suspension.

The first time these fighters met just over seven years ago, Max Holloway was the youngest fighter on the UFC roster and lost via submission in the first round. Now, the 27-year-old is one of the most exciting talents in the franchise, and the reigning undisputed UFC Featherweight Champion. Holloway steps up to lightweight this weekend, as he seeks revenge against Dustin Poirier.

‘The Diamond’ is the only man to have stopped Holloway, whose two other losses came via decision. ‘Blessed’ is on a 13-fight winning streak though, with the last four victories coming inside the distance. Two of those were impressive title defences against #1 contender Jose Aldo, after he took the featherweight strap from Anthony Pettis.

Poirier also beat Pettis recently, kicking off a three-fight winning streak following the no contest against Eddie Alvarez. After scooping performance of the night in beating Alvarez in the rematch last July, a hip injury forced Poirier to pull out of a fight with Nate Diaz at UFC 230. Back to full fitness, the Louisiana native has his first title shot here.

It’s a fascinating encounter, with Holloway one of the UFC’s best pound-for-pound fighters. He’s #4 in those rankings, but this is a step up in weight against a man who’s been operating at 155 pounds for four years. However, the Hawaiian lays a legitimate claim to being the greatest featherweight in history, and as his nickname suggests, is blessed with an array of skills.

He combines real intelligence in the octagon with excellent striking and a relentless engine and dedication to his craft. As well as the ability to close distance with ease, he improves with every fight and has an impressive takedown defence. That should stand him in good stead after losing on the ground via mounted triangle armbar in the first fight with Poirier.

That victory should give ‘The Diamond’ plenty of confidence, as should his standing within the lightweight ranks. Poirier comes into this fight ranked #4 in the division, and brings real tenacity, as well as skill and stamina. Combined with Holloway’s famous output, that means we’re likely to see a huge amount of punches thrown.

Poirer has a 3in-reach advantage, but Holloway’s speed and movement will help him to negate that. ‘Blessed’ will also look to hurt his opponent with leg kicks to slow him down and get inside. All this means we could be on for a knockout over five rounds of action.
