Croatia welcome Spain to Zagreb with head coach Zlatko Dalic knowing that only a win will do if they are to top the group.
Croatia have gone through a massive upheaval since reaching the World Cup final in the summer with a number of retirements changing the look of what had become a settled starting eleven. Zlatko Dalic has named some up and coming youngsters in the squad to face Spain and England and will hope that they can emulate the stars of the past.
Spain seem to have regained some of the swagger that saw them win back-to-back major championships a few years ago. Luis Enrique has been able to get his more inexperienced players to perform to his high standards and regulars such as Isco have played in a way that suggests that Spain might be back.
Croatia’s results have not been good since the summer with only one win in four games – a friendly against Jordan last time out. They managed a draw at home against England but were comprehensively beaten by Spain in the first Nations League match and defeat here would effectively relegate them from League A.
Spain have been very impressive since being knocked out of the World Cup by Russia – although the three goals they allowed in the first half against England proved too much in the last Nations League match. A victory here would see Spain win the group and advance to the inaugural Nations League semi finals. A 2-1 victory could be on the cards.
- Spain to win
England shocked Spain in their last game and Croatia will hope they can repeat the trick in Zagreb. But Luis Enrique’s men can be unstoppable at their best and should win here.
- Both teams to score
Croatia can actually still win the group so there is no question whether they will go for it against Spain. But the visitors are too strong meaning that both sides should find the net.

Head to Head
Results have been fairly even between these two sides – until the initial Nations League match where Spain completely overpowered Croatia winning 6-0 in Elche.
- With six goals against, only Iceland’s defence have been more welcoming in all of the League A groups.
- Spain have scored 10 goals in three Nations League matches since the summer – that’s on top of the four they put past Wales in a friendly.
- Croatia have only ever beaten Spain on two occasions – once in their first fixture against La Roja and again at the 2016 European Championships.
- Sergio Ramos has played 160 times for his country and scored on just 16 occasions. But he has scored in the last three games.
