West Virginia - Third State to Begin Online Sports Betting

West Virginia’s very first online sports betting site launched last week, making it only the third state of the union that now has legal online sports betting. New Jersey and Nevada are the other two states that also offers legal mobile and online sports wagering. With the online gambling and sports betting apps now in operation, West Virginia is ready for a significant boost in tax revenue into the State Government coffers.

West Virginia first passed legislation earlier in 2018 to legalize sports betting, both for commercial sportsbooks and online gambling and mobile applications. However, the State Government had to wait until May, when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Federal ban on sports betting that existed in most states of the country.

Thanks to the proactive nature of the State’s Legislators being ready to act, West Virginia was already firmly in place to offer legal online sportsbooks after beginning land-based operations in the state on August 30 2018.

Combined with a bunch of added features to attract new West Virginian sports fans, and Delaware North are ecstatic to beaten other sportsbook to market in what is expected to become a very competitive marketplace in West Virginia for online sportsbooks.

Word is that DraftKings Sportsbook will be looking to extend their highly successful New Jersey online sportsbook into the West Virginian marketplace after a partnership agreement was announced between DraftKings and Hollywood Casino earlier in December 2018.

Kim Florence, the Regional VP and GM for both the Mardi Gras and Wheeling Island Casinos, spoke glowingly of the new sports betting experience available for West Virginians at the two venues:

“Our patrons are going to enjoy these spaces in the casinos and everything else we have to offer in terms of hospitality and entertainment. We are eager to welcome people from throughout the state and the regions surrounding West Virginia to try a new experience at our casinos.”

Delaware North had previously announced it intended to launch sports betting online and in its casinos concurrently after the November completion of field testing with the West Virginia Lottery Commission. The planned October retail launches at both casinos was delayed by Delaware North in order to begin its online-and-retail products simultaneously.
