Venezuela vs Argentina: Predictions, Betting Tips & Odds

Copa America 2019 Quarter Finals
Venezuela vs Argentina, Copa America, Maracanã Stadium, Quarter-final

Venezuela’s unbeaten run in this year’s Copa America comes under pressure from an Argentina side eager to prove they are only getting stronger as the tournament progresses.

There’s nothing quite like doing things the hard way, as Argentina are finding out.

One of the pre-tournament favourites, it took until the final group game against Qatar for Lionel Scaloni’s men to claim their first win of the tournament and ensure they made it through to the last eight.

It is a different story entirely for Venezuela, though.

Drawn with Peru, hosts Brazil and Bolivia, little was expected of Rafael Dudamel’s men, but his side remain unbeaten after two draws and a win.

That means this game is not the walk over everyone may have expected despite Argentina being backed as big favourites to win the game with online betting sites and make it to the semi-finals once again.

That favourite tag is justified too despite a shaky group stage for Argentina as the White and Blues have only ever lost one competitive tie with their opponents and just twice in 25 head to heads.

However, Venezuela are a side on the up and despite the far inferior head to head record, have not lost a game to Argentina since a 4-1 defeat in the Copa America in 2016.

Venezuela are no push overs then but look likely to come up a little short as Argentina reach the last four once again in a 3-1 win.

A great bet this one to essentially double up especially as a total of 31 goals have been scored in just five Copa America meetings between the two – that’s an average of 6.2 goals per game.

Head to Head

Argentina’s record over the Venezuela is far superior and during the 1975 Copa America tournament, Argentina inflicted Venezuela’s largest ever international defeat, stuffing them 11-0.

However, more recently Venezeula actually won the last meeting between the two 3-1 during an international friendly earlier this year.

Overall, Venezuela have recorded just two wins with Argentina claiming 21 and a total of three draws.

  • Argentina have won all five meetings between the two in the Copa America.
  • Venezuela have only ever reached the last four of the Copa America once (2011).
  • Venezuela remain unbeaten in the tournament with two draws and a win from their three group games to finish second in Group A.
  • Argentina defeated Qatar 2-0 to progress to the quarter-final and finish second in Group B.
