Predictions & Betting Tips

The more experienced Jimmie ‘El Terror’ Rivera pits his wits against rising star Petr ‘No Mercy’ Yan, as the wide-open bantamweight division looks forward to some clarity at UFC 238. Rivera starts the fight as the #7 contender in the 135-pound section, while Yan has broken into the top 10 and starts #9.

Rivera comes into the contest on the back of two defeats in his last three fights. He was stopped by Marlon Moraes following a vicious head kick, while a decision victory over John Dodson preceded a defeat by the same manner to Aljamain Sterling in February. Those two losses have stalled the momentum of the New Jersey-born 29-year-old of Puerto Rican and Italian descent, ending his 20-fight winning streak.

El Terror is now 6-2 in the UFC, and he needs a victory this weekend if he’s going to earn a title shot anytime soon. Yan meanwhile is still very much on an upward trajectory, with seven straight wins to his name. He’s 4-0 since making his UFC debut less than a year ago, and his style in the Octagon is as active as his schedule.

No Mercy was dominant in also beating Dodson via decision in his last fight, and his only MMA loss came over three years ago by way of split decision. A tough Russian with a boxing background and granite chin, Yan is taller and leaner than Rivera, but actually gives away an inch or so in reach.

That won’t faze the exciting 26-year-old though, who walks down his opponents with a bullish confidence in his ability to trade shots. However, Rivera is a very gritty fighter who can scramble and wrestle. If he can score some takedowns, El Terror’s ground game could pose a real test for Yan who’s barely been taken to the canvas in the UFC so far.

Yan’s takedown defence could be the key to this fight. Rivera prefers to stay on his feet and is a very powerful puncher who will look for hooks and combinations to the body, but he could see Yan’s inexperience on the ground as an area to exploit. El Terror has excellent conditioning, and has won 16 of the 18 decisions his fights have gone to.

Six of Rivera’s last seven fights have gone the distance. That could certainly be worth a look considering this is a bout between two tough fighters, with two of Yan’s last three fights going to the judges. If you’re after outright odds, Yan starts as the favourite with some of the best betting sites, while Rivera is the underdog.
