Predictions and Betting Tips

Miesha Tate? First-round submission. Ronda Rousey? First-round knockout. Cris Cyborg? First-round knockout. Amanda ‘Lioness’ Nunes has a legitimate claim to being the greatest female mixed martial artist in history. Next up for the first simultaneous two-weight women’s champion is Holly ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ Holm, who already has an almighty upset on her record.

Holm handed Rousey her first ever MMA loss in winning bantamweight gold almost four years ago. Since then though, the Albuquerque native has lost four of her six fights, including a fifth-round submission against Tate, and a defeat to Cyborg on points. She has won two of her last three though, which includes her impressive KO victory against Bethe Correira.

However, that was over two years ago now, while Holm has been out of the Octagon since June of last year. The 37-year-old faces a gigantic task this weekend against a woman well on her way to legendary status. Nunes is on an eight-fight win streak, and hasn’t lost in almost five years. Having only just turned 31, she has the capacity to dominate the bantamweight and featherweight divisions for years to come.

Lioness is a brutal puncher, as she showcased in her last fight. In ending Cyborg’s 20-fight undefeated streak and handing her fellow Brazilian her first ever loss in the UFC, Nunes displayed incredible speed to go with her ruthless striking. Cyborg hit the canvas four times in the first 50 seconds of the fight, and couldn’t live with her compatriot’s ferocity as she lost her belt.

That doesn’t bode well at all for Holm. The Preacher’s Daughter has to stay on the outside and keep out of Nunes’s striking range. Then she can bring her kickboxing into play, which was the key to her success against Correira and the source of her most stunning UFC moment, as she KO’d Rousey with a head kick.

However, Nunes fights like a pit bull, and she isn’t afraid to take some punishment coming in to close the distance. She knows that she can blast any opponent out of the Octagon, and it’s no surprise the champion is the strong favourite. As such, we’re after some value on Nunes retaining her title.

The likeliest outcome seems to be Lioness winning by KO or TKO. Nunes has won three of her last four fights by that method, and she’s evens to improve that record even further here. Holm has never been KO’d before, but she’s never faced anyone like Nunes.
