Predictions and Betting Tips
Valentina Shevchenko is a formidable force ruling over the women’s flyweight division, but the champion may not have things all her own way for too much longer. Andrea ‘KGB’ Lee and Montana de la Rosa have both surged up the rankings, and this weekend sees the 125-pound section’s #10 and #11 contenders square off inside the Octagon.
This is Lee’s third fight in the UFC, having won her opening two bouts in the franchise by unanimous decisions, the first of which, against Veronica Macedo, took the Fight of the Night award at UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. Usman in May of last year. KGB was supposed to fight Jessica-Rose Clark in December, but the bout was cancelled after Clark was hospitalised during her weight cut.
That meant Lee didn’t get to fight again until February, when she dispatched the experienced Ashlee Evans-Smith to move into the top 10 in the flyweight contender rankings. The Texan is on a six-fight win streak, and big things are expected of a woman who hails from a boxing and kickboxing background.
An accomplished striker with incredible technique, look out for Lee’s vicious leg kicks, as well as brutal elbows and knees in the clinch. KGB carries a lot of power, complemented by her excellent head movement and ground game. With great wrestling skills and submissions, she has the capacity to completely dominate her opponents, swarming them with pressure and varied striking, and the ability to close fights on the ground.
This is going to be a very tough fight for De la Rosa, who came through The Ultimate Fighter with two wins and beat Nadia Kassem with a second-round armbar at UFC 234 in February. Also hailing from Texas, all three of De la Rosa’s UFC fights so far have ended with her arm raised following a submission.
You may want to check out De la Rosa for a submission win, but she starts this fight as the 15/8 underdog with some of the best betting sites. She gives away an inch and a half’s reach advantage to Lee, and she could struggle to cope with that. KGB is a busy, accurate striker, who will come at her from all angles.
Lee is expected to continue her rise up through the flyweight rankings, and she’s the 1/2 odds-on favourite to come out on top in this contest. KGB’s style means she can be easier to hit than De la Rosa, and that’s something the underdog will have to take advantage of if she’s going to stand a chance.
