Inaugural women’s featherweight champion Germaine de Randamie is back down at 135 pounds this weekend as she takes on rising star Aspen Ladd at UFC Fight Night 155.
Germaine de Randamie
While Amanda Nunes goes about her business of completely dominating both the bantamweight and featherweight divisions, the scramble is on to become the woman who dethrones the almighty Brazilian. Germaine ‘The Iron Lady’ de Randamie fell to a first round TKO against Nunes back in 2013, but the future’s full of hope for Aspen Ladd.
The California native fights on home soil this weekend, as she aims to extend her eight-fight winning streak. Still yet to taste defeat in her professional MMA career, Ladd has only ever lost once in the amateurs over five years ago. Beating Sijara Eubanks as recently as May, the 24-year-old is on the up.
She hasn’t faced anyone of De Randamie’s quality yet though. The experienced Dutchwoman may have turned 35 a few months ago, but she remains one of the most precise strikers in the women’s ranks. She comes with serious pedigree too, after recording a unanimous decision over Holly Holm to become the first featherweight queen.
The Iron Lady only relinquished that title when she refused to face Cris Cyborg on account of the Brazilian’s chequered drugs past, and hasn’t lost since that defeat to Nunes almost six years ago. She isn’t a hugely active fighter though, and may be the victim of a little ring rust after last appearing in the Octagon in November of last year.
Ladd may have the edge there, but De Randamie is excellent at managing distance, and she’ll use her commanding 5-inch reach advantage to try and set the tone. That reach will help her avoid the takedowns that Ladd may need to win the fight, as the American is unlikely to want to stand and trade with her opponent.
The Iron Lady is a clean, quick, powerful puncher who does damage with her leg kicks and counters with style. Ladd lacks the same technical ability, and if she doesn’t offer more movement in this fight she’ll be in trouble. However, she’s likely to try to utilise her grappling skills, and her rise through the ranks to become the #4 contender in the 135-pound division has been down in no small part to her ability in top position.
With six stoppages in her eight pro fights, Ladd is the odds-on favourite for the win with a selection of the best betting sites.
