Copa America 2019 Quarter Finals
Colombia vs Chile Copa America 2019, Stadium, Quarter Finals

Holders Chile face Colombia in the quarter-finals of the 2019 Copa America which is being held in Brazil.

Colombia topped their Copa America group with three wins out of three and finished on nine points ahead of Argentina, Paraguay and Qatar. Los Cafeteros defeated the Argentinians 2-0 thanks to Roger Martinez and Duvan Zapata goals. They then beat both Paraguay and Qatar 1-0 with Atalanta’s Zapata scoring the winner over the Qataris.

Chile came second in their group on six points behind Uruguay, who finished with seven, but ahead of Japan and Ecuador. La Roja beat Japan 4-0 in the opening fixture thanks to an Edu Vargas double, and goals from Alexis Sanchez and Eric Pulgar – they then beat Ecuador 2-1 with Sanchez again getting on the score sheet before losing 1-0 to Uruguay, who had Edison Cavani to thank for scoring their winner.

Colombia reached their quarter-final stage of the last tournament held in Brazil during the 2014 World Cup. They won three games out of three in the group stage that included Greece, Ivory Coast, and Japan and then defeated Uruguay 2-0 in the second round, before losing to the hosts 2-1.

Chile have won this competition back to back in the previous two editions and were knocked out by the hosts in the 2014 World Cup which was played in Brazil after coming second in the group stage behind the Netherlands, but ahead of Spain and Australia. However, the Chileans failed to qualify for the next edition in Russia in 2018. But here, a 2-1 win for Colombia is well worth a shout.

Colombia have been impressive so far during this tournament, but now come up against the double winners. Whose experience at this stage of the competition could be the difference, however, the younger Colombia side could have the firepower to see them through.

Colombia have only scored once in their last three games with Chile, and this doesn’t appear to be, on paper, a goal-laden game.
