Canada Grand Prix Predictions – Formula 1

Grand Prix Canada

The race is over.
First place: Lewis Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton will be in the hunt for his third successive Grand Prix victory in Canada.

The expectation is that Mercedes will dominate again, but Ferrari are desperate to change that after failing to win any of their races this season.

No stopping Mercedes

World champion Hamilton reigned victorious again in Spain and Monaco and bookmakers expect him to make it three in a row.

Team-mate Valtteri Bottas enjoyed less good fortune last time out but still secured a podium finish. It was the first time the Finn has finished outside the top two all season.

To make matters all the more daunting for their rivals, Mercedes are set for an engine upgrade in Canada, making their star duo all the more powerful.

The team will also be utilising Pirelli’s softer tyres after Hamilton’s recent complaints, with Bottas keeping harder tyres.

Question marks hanging over Ferrari

It’s been a very different story for Ferrari so far in the Championship and their title hopes are already dwindling, bar an impressive turnaround.

Popular sportsbooks have already decimated Sebastian Vettel’s chances of stealing Hamilton’s throne and despite all the early excitement surrounding 21-year-old Charles Leclerc, his chances of upsetting the established elite have faded rapidly too.

All the excitement generated by their speed in pre-season could be tempered further if Ferrari have another poor race.

The key stats

As it stands, Hamilton has won four Grand Prix’s and Bottas two. The former boasts 137 points and Bottas 120, both of which compare rather favourably to a disappointing 82 for Vettel in third.

Hamilton’s record in Canada is excellent. Only the king of Formula 1 Michael Schumacher has won more on this particular track.

The 34-year-old has triumphed in six of the last 12 years, though it was Vettel who came out on top in 2018.

On that occasion, the German had gone into the race trailing Hamilton by 14 points in the standings but was able to close the gap. Ferrari badly need him to do the same again.
