Brazil vs Paraguay: Predictions, Betting Tips & Odds

Copa America 2019 Quarter Finals
Brazil vs Paraguay Copa America 2019, Arena do Grêmio, Quarter Finals

The Selecao go into their quarter final tie with Paraguay as big favourites after the impressive 5-0 win over Peru.

The 0-0 draw with Venezuela made some Brazilian fans anxious ahead of their last group game match against Peru. But five goals spread throughout the team showed why the hosts are still favourites to lift the Copa America trophy on July 7. Confidence will be high ahead of this tie and another victory will be expected of Tite’s men.

Paraguay limped through to the final eight after losing their game against Colombia – thanks to Japan’s inability to find a winner in their match with Ecuador. Eduardo Berizzo’s side have not impressed so far in this tournament but may go into this game believing that there is nothing to lose. But it won’t only be the bookies that don’t give Paraguay a chance here.

That goalless draw against Venezuela is now looking like a minor blip as Brazil go into the quarter finals as the tournament’s highest scoring side. That should be regarded as a big achievement, considering they have had to do without star man Neymar. More goals will be expected against Paraguay – and it could be a quiet night for Alisson in the Brazilian goal.

The sports betting sites don’t see an upset in this game – and it is difficult to disagree with them. Paraguay did make the semi finals in 2015 but coming up against the hosts – who are yet to concede a goal – things don’t look too bright for the ‘visitors’. This could end in a comprehensive 3-0 win for Brazil.

Players such as Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino were expected to get the goals for Brazil but so far Gremio’s Everton has looked one of the best players in the tournament.

Head to Head

Although Brazil has enjoyed this fixture over the years, the majority of recent games have actually ended all square. That trend doesn’t look like continuing in Porto Alegre however.

  • Brazil are the top scorers in the competition so far with eight goals. They are also yet to concede – the only other team to keep three clean sheets is Colombia who have only managed four goals in three games.
  • Paraguay are the only team to progress to the quarter finals without winning a single game. They have only recorded draws against Qatar and Argentina.
  • If Brazil do get past Paraguay it will be the first time since 2007 that they have made it to the final four. They went on to win the Copa America that year, beating Argentina in the final.
  • Paraguay managed to get to the semi finals in two of the last three Copa Americas – but, incredibly, only won once in 15 games in that time.
