Wolves 1 – 1 Man City
The Premier League new boys have an early season lunchtime date with Pep and his reigning champions.
All eyes were on Wolves at the opening weekend of the season and Ruben Neves’ magical free kick set a marker, even though ultimately a draw with 10-man Everton may have been a little disappointing. Then came defeat to Leicester City, a game in which, while Wolves may have played well, they ended up with knowing to show for it. The question of whether or not they’d be able to carry their impressive Championship form into the big league has yet to be definitively answered.
Manchester City’s strength in depth means that almost any of their starting XI can be rested with two or three top international players ready to fill the gap. And indeed, they didn’t miss a step without Kevin De Bruyne as they routed Huddersfield on Sunday, while also leaving Raheem Sterling on the bench for the full 90 minutes.
Wolves may welcome City without fear but nothing can prepare Nuno Santo and his players for facing a City side in the kind of form they showed against Huddersfield. The hosts will need to be at their best and then some to keep the score even respectable, never mind to be on the winning side of it.
According to some pundits it seems as though Manchester City should be handed the Premier League trophy now. They have dominated both Chelsea in the Community Shield and Arsenal in the season opener and it does look like they could be looking at back-to-back top-flight titles – something that hasn’t been achieved for 10 years. City look too strong for Wolves and could win this 3-1.
Pep Guardiola’s rotation policy means it is difficult to predict first goalscorers as even player such as Sergio Aguerro are not assured of a place in the starting line-up, though his Huddersfield hat-trick surely means he’ll keep his place. What can be assumed is that there will be goals – and Wolves should be able to contribute even if they end up on the wrong side of the result.

To be slightly more confident of a selection punters could be interested in both sides scoring and City to win the match – Huddersfield did find a goal, after all. Wolves looked dangerous enough in their opening two games that they could test Pep’s defence – but with the Sky Blues in such great form already, nothing but a win seems likely.

Head to Head
These two sides met in the fourth round of last year’s EFL Cup where Wolves were the first side that season to stop City from scoring. The Premier League champions eventually went through on penalties. Due to Wolves’ absence from the Premier League you have to go back to 2010 for their last victory over City.
- Aguero’s hat-trick against Huddersfield was the 13th of his City career.
- Manchester City broke all kinds of records on their way to winning the Premier League last season – including most goals, most points and most wins.
- Wolves dominated the Championship last season. They went top in the middle of October and only dropped to second place for a solitary week before returning to the summit and staying there for the rest of the season.
