ICC World Cup Match 29 Squad Comparison

West Indies

After their first match against Pakistan, where the bowlers dominated the opposition wrapping up the Pakistan innings for 105 runs, West Indies haven’t been won a match. They had their chance against Australia chasing 289 runs after a great bowling performance to get Aussies 79-5. Windies were 6 wickets down with 38 more runs required to win from 30 balls. Both Jason Holder and Carlos Brathwaite were out in the 46th over and the game was snatched away by Aussies.

While it was the wrong shot selection that cost them the game against Australia, their bowling was consistent till then. However, in next two matches, West Indies had a poor run with both bat and ball. They were all-out for 212 against England, and in their last match against Bangladesh, Windies failed to defend 321 runs. Bangladesh chased down the target 41.3 overs with 7 wickets in hand.

Windies players were sloppy in the field, missing out on chances to get Shakib al Hasan out, and not able save singles and doubles, while the bowlers couldn’t vary their length and game plan against the set batsmen. Evin Lewis, Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer and Jason Holder are the batsmen to watch out for. A deep batting line-up with some great hitters and balanced batsmen like Shai Hope, West Indies have the potential to build a good total, though they have lacked the ability to finish the innings on a high in this tournament.

New Zealand

One of the only two teams to stay unbeaten in World Cup 2019 so far, New Zealand have won 4 matches so far and are on the top in the points table. New Zealand may not be stronger than the other teams in top 4 – India, Australia and England, but the Black Caps have the temperament needed win ODI matches. The last match against South Africa, New Zealand lost quick wickets in the middle and were 4 down for 80, and it was getting difficult to score runs on that track.

Chasing 242 runs, skipper Kane Williamson played a captain’s knock and also had a bit of luck by his side. Colin de Grandhomme who walked in to bat at number 7, when New Zealand were 137-5, paced the innings 5 fours and 2 sixes, scoring 60 off 47 balls. That innings took the pressure off of Kane Williamson stayed unbeaten on 106 as New Zealand won by 4 wickets. This was the second time, New Zealand were caught in a tense chase in this tournament. They were in a similar situation against Bangladesh chasing 245, losing wickets in the middle and the match swinging both ways till the end. Mitchell Santner played a short but important role of finishing things off for New Zealand as they won by 2 wickets.

The bowlers are in good form, and are likely to continue against West Indies. Though the top order failed to give a good start in the last match, they will likely bounce back or have the middle order build partnerships in case the top order flops again.

Our Prediction for West Indies vs New Zealand

New Zealand would win this match

West Indies aren’t playing the kind of cricket they’d need to win matches in World Cup tournament. They have issues with fitness of their players, and need to get the playing XI right. Without a frontline spinner, West Indies bowling seems to struggle when the pacers don’t get wickets and Holder has no one to turn to. While New Zealand on the other hand have the wining momentum on their side, and confidence in their bowling and execution of game plan.
