ICC World Cup Match 23 Squad Comparison

West Indies

After the 1st ODI was washed out, Windies lost the 2nd match by 59 runs chasing 270 in 46 overs in another rain-affected game. Sheldon Cottrell and Roston Chase bowled well to dismiss Indian openers early in the innings. Windies were in a strong position after Carlos Brathwaite dismissed Rishabh Pant and India were 101-3. However, it took another 19 overs and 125 runs until Windies picked the next wicket. Windies couldn’t get the better of Indian middle order as even after Kohli, Iyer and Jadhav were out, Indian batsmen kept scoring and reached 279-7.

West Indies failed to break the partnership between Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer which turned out to be most impactful. Evin Lewis was the only top order batsmen with any major contributions for West Indies in the chase. Chris Gayle, Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer were out cheaply as Windies were 92-3 in the 18th over. Lewis and Nicholas Pooran had a 56-runs stand between them for the 4th wicket. Lewis was out for 65, and Nicholas Pooran followed the suit a few overs later and Windies were 179-5. Things went downward spiral for the hosts from this point onwards. They lost 5 more wickets for just 31 runs in the next 7 overs.

West Indies have a good bowling attack with Sheldon Cottrell, Roston Chase, and Brathwaite. Oshane Thomas has been consistently expensive and looking for his replacement may not be a bad idea. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has dismissed Gayle many times now and would continue to trouble the Universe Boss with swing. While West Indies have good hitter lower down the order, they lack partnerships at the top. Facing Indian bowlers in the death overs is challenging for any middle or lower order batsmen who’s just walked in to bat. Windies need their top order batsmen to stay longer at the crease and tackle Indian bowling attack one over at a time.

India

India must be happy with the way Shreyas Iyer played a responsible innings, and built a 125-runs partnership with Kohli. While Rishabh Pant at number 4 didn’t really get going as he was out for 20 off 35 balls, Shreyas Iyer seems to have made a place for himself at number 5. India’s number 4 woes date back to before the 2019 World Cup and still continue on this tour of West Indies. India does have a choice in KL Rahul who had done well at number 4 in the early matches of the World Cup. Since Indian openers are seldom out of form, and consistently deliver big scores, the number 4 issue hasn’t impacted in a big way in this series.

Unless India’s chasing a above par total and lose early wickets, choice of number 4 isn’t questioned. Virat Kohli, another consistent batsmen in India’s batting lineup makes the job of middle and lower order much easier. Given the top 3 batsmen do most of the job for India might just become a problem in a scenario where three of them are out without scoring much. Bhuvneshwar Kumar continued his bowling dominance picking up 4 for 31 in 8 overs. Indian bowlers were on top of the game since the power play and just when a partnership between Lewis and Pooran crossed 50 runs, Kuldeep Yadav gave the breakthrough dismissing Evin Lewis. Indian bowlers were better than Windies when it came to cleaning up the tail. This was inspite of Windies have a stronger batting tail with great hitting abilities.

Our Prediction for West Indies vs India

India would win this match

India has dominated West Indies in all departments in this series. Indian batsmen are likely to continue their form while Rishabh Pant would definitely look to improve given the nature of competition within the team. Bowlers have been on top of their game since quite a long time and would be confident form the result of the last game.

Windies on the other hand have struggled with the bat since the beginning of this tour. They had a hard time finishing the match after a great start during the World Cup. They have a lot to work and improve on and will probably take an overall team effort if they’re to win this match. Betting sites would offer great odds for live betting markets and we reckon they’ll be worth checking out.
