Squad Comparison

West Indies

West Indies will play their 1st T20I series after a bitter-sweet World Cup 2019 campaign. Windies batting order is packed with big hitters at the top and all-rounders in the middle like Kieron Pollard, Andre Russel and skipper himself Carlos Brathwaite. These three will be very crucial for the West Indies to get to a big total. Russell and Brathwaite have the ability to add over 50 runs in last 4-5 overs. Such innings from both of them would shift the momentum of the game in Windies’ favor even if they lose wickets at the top in early overs. The key for Brathwaite’s team will be to keep wickets in hand in the middle overs, delaying the arrival of Russell and Brathwaite for until after 12 or 13 overs. They’ve got the right men for this job in Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran in the middle order. Evin Lewis is the perfect opener any team would ask for, and his role will be to get the maximum out of power play.

West Indies have 3 bowlers – Sunil Narine, Sheldon Cottrell and Oshane Thomas in the squad. Narine being a bowling all-rounder, who’s very handy with the bat, Windies are going with just 2 full-time bowlers. At this venue, given the ground dimensions, Indian batsmen will likely attack Sunil Narine. It comes down to Oshane Thomas and Sheldon Cottrell to pick early wickets, dismissing India’s top-order batsmen. Apart from his injury in the World Cup, Russell’s performance was impressive. He will be the go-to man for Brathwaite to get a breakthrough. Keemo Paul could be a better choice for the 3rd all-rounder over Kieron Pollard. Given India’s batting strength, Windies will need more options in the bowling department to restrict India.

India is probably on a new path after their World Cup loss in the summer. There have been a lot of questions around the selection of the team to coach and rifts between senior players. Dismissing all rumors of in-fighting in the team, Kohli looks keen on continuing what he does best – deliver. Team India are coming with Washington Sundar, Krunal Pandya, Manish Pandey, Shreyas Iyer, Khaleel Ahmed, and Deepak Chahar in the squad. Most of the regular bowling attack has been rested and a fresh lot of players with less experience are given the opportunity.

The top 3 – Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, and Virat Kohli will lead Manish Pandey, Shreyas Iyer in the batting department. India may choose to go with either Pandey or Iyer, making a spot for one batting all-rounder and a bowling all-rounder. While India looks solid in the batting department with the likes of Sharma, Dhawan, and Kohli to lead from the front, Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the only senior and experienced bowler in the side. Ravindra Jadeja’s experience could make him a must in the side, while Khaleel Ahmed’s recent performances are impressive. He has delivered match-winning spells for India before. If India goes for the 4th pacer, they will have Navdeep Saini and Deepak Chahar in the playing XI. Going for 3 pacers and a full-time spinner Rahul Chahar will mean the 5th bowler will be one of the all-rounders, all of whom are spinners.

On a ground where West Indies have previously played exceptional cricket against India, the visitors seem to have less power in their bowling attack. India will need the opening bowlers to strike early in the innings, putting Windies under pressure, to allow Saini, or Rahul Chahar bowl more freely in the middle overs. If India fails to get early breakthrough, West Indies will overpower the visitors and get to a big total.

Our Prediction for West Indies vs India

India would win this match

India will start favorites given West Indies’ recent form in T20I series and their last series against India. However, a game of T20I where Windies is involved, nothing is certain. Toss is important, as the average 1st innings score at this venue is 166, and average 2nd innings score is 125. Windies would fancy their chances of a win if they win the toss and elect to bat first.

While India is clear favorite to start on all top betting sites, these betting odds are likely to move up and down once the match is underway. A T20 match between two competitive teams is likely to go through intense situations, in which the difference in probabilities of either team to win will reach its minimum.
