WI vs IND 1st Match Squad Comparison

West Indies

After a lackluster World Cup 2019 campaign, West Indies will be playing India on home soil in a one-day international series. After a crushing loss in the T20 international series, Windies have a lot of catching up to do. The batting order faced repeated failures at the top. Nicholas Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer did not get enough runs for the side in the T20 internationals. They are very crucial in the middle for the ODI side after Shai Hope at number 3. Shai Hope will have a lot of responsibility on his shoulders to build partnerships in the middle overs, and if he walks in to bat after an early loss, it would be his job to anchor the innings.

Windies played England in their last ODI series at home, where the batting was exceptional along with some great innings from Chris Gayle. It has been a long time since then and the Windies camp has gone through a lot. We expect the bowlers to do well for their side. Sheldon Cottrell will be expected to pick wickets upfront and try to put India on the backfoot. Oshane Thomas had high economy rates against India on their tour of India last year. While India has a power-packed batting order, Windies bowlers have a big job at hand restricting India. Kemar Roach can be economical with his spell while Jason Holder has time and again found breakthroughs for his side in the middle overs.

India won the 3rd and final T20 international against West Indies chasing 147. Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant, both had not played big innings in the previous matches. Pant had very low scores in the first two T20I matches but ended the series on a high staying unbeaten on 65 off 42 balls as India won by 7 wickets. It remains to be seen who Virat Kohli chooses for India’s number 4 in ODIs. Both KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant are included in the ODI squad and are good options for the role. KL Rahul has more experience in comparison and has the ability to stay at the crease longer and build partnerships in ODI format. While Rishabh Pant is more suitable for the slogging phase of the match and is yet to prove his mettle.

India has included batting all-rounder Kedar Jadhav along with a bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja in the squad. Kedar Jadhav can be a strong contender for the number 4 spot given is experience in the middle and his ability to build long partnerships. The spin twins, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal will lead the spin attack for India and are likely to bowl the most action-filled 20 overs together. The two have been very successful at home and away venues, and all eyes will be on how they perform in the West Indies. Pace attack led by Mohammad Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar is very strong along with Navdeep Saini and Khaleel Ahmed finding success in the T20 format. The bowling unit will be confident going up against the Windies side and we can expect good performances for India with both ball and bat.

Our Prediction for West Indies vs India

India would win this match

India is an overall stronger side than West Indies. India’s bowling and batting attack is much stronger than Windies. Though the middle order is where India could be vulnerable if attacked with the right strategy and bowling discipline.

There will be different phases in the match where West Indies will likely dominate. However, defeating India would take a top class performance in every aspect of the game for any team in the world. The margin for error is very low and even the betting sites offer much higher odds for a Windies win. The higher the betting odds for a team’s victory, the less their probability of winning as perceived by the bookmaker.
