- Date : 20th June 2018
- Time : 8:30 PM (IST)

In the second match of Group A, Uruguay, fresh from a last minute victory against Egypt, will be looking for their second victory against a Saudi side haplessly thrashed 5-0 by Russia on the opening day.
FIFA World Cup Qualification
Saudi Arabia topped their group and dominated their way to World Cup qualification. They scored 28 goals in just 8 matches, with their forward Mohammad Al Sahlawi emerging as the top scorer in the AFC Qualification process with 14 goals.
Uruguay’s sharpshooter Edinson Cavani was on fire during the CONMEBOL qualifiers, as he was the highest scorer in South America. However, despite an impressive start containing a huge 3-0 win against Chile, their campaign was in danger with 3 defeats in a row, before a formation change and the return of Luis Suarez from injury ensured they qualified comfortably in the end, finishing second behind Brazil.
This is Saudi Arabia’s first World Cup Finals’ appearance since 2006, and their team does not look to be in particularly great form either. However, their recent form has still been better than their opponents as the Green Falcons have won 2 matches in their last 6 games. They managed back-to-back impressive victories at home against Greece and Algeria, while also earning a credible draw against Ukraine. However, in their first game in this tournament they were thrashed 5-0 by Russia.
Uruguay have been in decent form in recent times. With 3 wins and 2 draws in their last 6 matches, the South Americans look to be in good shape heading in to this tournament. The team seems to have regrouped at the right time and would be hoping for a good showing in Russia. They managed a last gasp winner against Egypt to give them a vital opening game victory.
Uruguay and Saudi Arabia in the World Cup So Far
Saudi Arabia began their World Cup campaign in the worst way possible, with a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of the hosts Russia. They looked in all sorts of trouble, with rumours of their players being threatened with punishment by some government officials. The team will need to regroup and hope for a better performance in this match.
Uruguay were handed a comparatively easy opening fixture against an Egyptian side badly missing their talisman Mohamed Salah. Egypt posted little or no threat in their opening game but Uruguay kept missing easy chances till the end of the game. However, just when it seemed like Egypt had managed to keep Uruguay at bay, they popped up with a set piece header right at the death to win the game, and gain 3 priceless points to keep the pressure on Russia.
Head To Head Record
These two nations have faced off just once before, in a friendly back in 2006 where Uruguay won 2-0.
Saudi Arabia’s Maverick winger Nawaf Al Abed is the only notable absentee from the Green Falcon’s squad as he lost the race against time to be fit for the World Cup.
Uruguay do not have any significant injuries as such, and will be hoping to keep Diego Godin and Luis Suarez fit for the entire campaign. However, they may need to shuffle their midfielders after an uninspiring performance in the opening game.
Players To Watch Out For
Saudi Arabia’s main striker Mohammad Al-Sahlawi laid down the marker with 14 goals in the qualification rounds, and would be looking to prove himself at the biggest stage of the all. Young and speedy winger Salem Al-Dawsari grabbed everyone’s attention when he brilliantly assisted 2 goals to help Villareal come back from 2-0 down to draw the game against the mighty Real Madrid, in the Spanish La Liga last season. Though he fired a blank in the opening game, Sahlawi is still a solid threat.
Uruguay’s world class strike force will again be expected to fire them to the final stages of the tournament, just like Diego Forlan did at the 2010 World Cup. Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani form arguably the strongest striker-pairing in the world, and the presence of Diego Godin, one of the best defenders in the world, means that this side does have the quality to challenge any nation at the tournament. Luis Suarez will need to work on his finishing though.
Saudi Arabia Vs Uruguay Betting Odds And Key Statistics
- Uruguay are very heavy favourites to win this clash against Saudi Arabia, especially considering their respective first game results.
- After Russia thrashed them 5-0, Saudi Arabia would be looking for some damage control, while Uruguay will try to emulate Russia’s goal difference by going on an all out attack. Hence, we advise betting on the above 2.5 goals market.
- Uruguay have a solid defence, and are not likely to concede to Saudi Arabia with their current form. Hence, we recommend betting on the both teams not to score market.
- Edinson Cavani looked much more threatening than Luis Suarez in the first match, and hence betting on him to open the scoring would be a smart choice.
With Saudi Arabia looking like the weakest team in the tournament with a curshing 5-0 defeat to Russia, Uruguay would be looking to exploit that and we are expecting another rout.
Our Predicted Scoreline : Uruguay 4-0 Saudi Arabia
