Today’s Predictions: Russia Vs Uruguay
Uruguay 3 – 0 Russia
The 33rd match of the FIFA World Cup 2018 will take place between hosts Russia and South American giants Uruguay.
- Date : 25th June 2018
- Time 7:30 PM (IST)
- Venue : Samera Stadium
The first match of the third round of the group stage is between Russia and Uruguay, with both teams looking to top their group. Russia have a much higher goal difference and even a draw will make sure they top the group, while Uruguay need to win this fixture to come first.
FIFA World Cup Qualification
Russia did not have to partake in the qualification process as being the host nation earned them automatic qualification to this gala event.
Uruguay’s sharpshooter Edinson Cavani was on fire during the CONMEBOL qualifiers, as he was the top scorer in South America. However, despite an impressive start containing a huge 3-0 win against Chile, their campaign was in danger with 3 defeats in a row, before a formation change and the return of Luis Suarez from injury ensured they qualified comfortably in the end, finishing second behind Brazil.
Stanislav Cherchesov’s men haven’t been in the best of forms going into this tournament. They haven’t managed a single win in their last 6 matches, and have lost their last 3 matches in a row. A 3-3 draw with the mighty Spain in November is their only credible result during that period. Back to back heavy defeats against pre-tournament favourites France and Brazil respectively, have caused fans to be very worried about the home team’s chances at the World Cup. However, they opened the tournament with a huge win and followed that up with another convincing win in the second match.
Uruguay have been in decent form in recent times. With 3 wins and 2 draws in their last 6 matches, the South Americans look to be in good shape heading in to this tournament. The team seems to have regrouped at the right time and would be hoping for a good showing in Russia. They managed a last gasp winner against Egypt to give them a vital opening game victory. While another narrow win against Saudi Arabia ensured they qualify.
Head To Head Record
These two nations have faced each other just once before, in a 1-1 draw in a friendly back in 2012.
Russia and Uruguay in the World Cup So Far
Russia kicked off the 2018 FIFA World Cup with a brilliant 5-0 thrashing of Saudi Arabia, to gain a strong hold over Group A. Their goal difference already looks unassailable after another thrashing of Egypt, who were beaten 3-1 in very convincing fashion, giving the home fans a lot to cheer about.
Uruguay were handed a comparatively easy opening fixture against an Egyptian side badly missing their talisman Mohamed Salah. Egypt posted little or no threat in their opening game but Uruguay kept missing easy chances till the end of the game. However, just when it seemed like Egypt had managed to keep Uruguay at bay, they popped up with a set piece header right at the death to win the game, and gain 3 priceless points to keep the pressure on Russia. Similarly, Uruguay missed plenty of chances in their second game against Saudi Arabia. However, a Luis Suarez winner was enough to give them a very narrow victory again.
Russia would be without one of their marquee players as Alexander Kokorin’s persistent knee injuries have ruled him out of the tournament. Without Kokorin, the goalscoring burden will have to be shared by Fyodor Smolov and Artyom Dzyuba. Cherchesov has decided to gamble on many young players for this tournament, including 22 year old twins Anton and Alexei Miranchuk.
Uruguay do not have any significant injuries as such, and will be hoping to keep Diego Godin and Luis Suarez fit for the entire campaign. However, they may need to shuffle their midfielders after an uninspiring performance in the opening game.
Players To Watch Out For
Russia are relying on several youngsters to carry them forward in this tournament, however they still have their stalwarts around to inspire them. Veteran goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev is still their captain, while 34 year old former Chelsea wingback Yuri Zhirkov is another vital cog in their lineup. Denis Cheryshev has been one of the best players in the World Cup so far, and would be looking to continue his devastating form, while Golovin is another major threat.
Uruguay’s world class strike force will again be expected to fire them to the final stages of the tournament, just like Diego Forlan did at the 2010 World Cup. Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani form arguably the strongest striker-pairing in the world, and the presence of Diego Godin, one of the best defenders in the world, means that this side does have the quality to challenge any nation at the tournament. Luis Suarez will need to work on his finishing though, despite scoring the winning goal in the previous game.
Russia Vs Uruguay Betting Odds And Key Statistics
- Uruguay are slight favourites in their third clash of the Group stage against the hosts, despite the fact that Russia have been one of the most convincing teams in the tournament so far.
- With both teams barely conceding till now, we strongly advise betting on the under 2.5 goals market.
- Russia have managed to score 8 goals already, but their opposition teams were very poor defensively, while Uruguay’s defence is comparatively world class and they did not look like conceding at all. We advise betting on both teams not to score in this match.
Both these teams have been defensively solid, while Uruguay’s strikers are yet to fully fire. We believe they have more potential to win this game as we expect Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez to finally come good, and ensure their nation finishes on top.
Predicted Scoreline : Uruguay 1-0 Russia
