The 21st match of the FIFA World Cup 2018 is between European giants France and South American nation Peru.
- Date : 21st June 2018
- Time : 8:30 PM (IST)
- Venue : Ekaterinburg Stadium
As Group C enters its second round of matches, we take a look at how France will tackle the unpredictable Peruvian side. France would be looking to go all the way in this tournament after finishing as runners up at Euro 2016.
FIFA World Cup Qualification
France had a decent qualifying phase, topping a tricky group also including Sweden and The Netherlands, eventually finishing 4 points above both of them. Draws against Luxemborg and Belarus, however, were disappointing, and Didier Deschamps’ men would be looking to improve to live up to the tag of pre-tournament favourites.
Peru had quite an eventful qualifying campaign, which began in the worst possible fashion as they were languishing with just 4 points in their last 7 matches. However, their manager found the perfect blend of youth and experience and turned the campaign around in some style. Huge wins over Paraguay and Ecuador fired Peru towards an international playoff against New Zealand, who were no match for the South Americans.
France have been in confident form in recent times, with 3 big wins in a row against Italy, Ireland and Russia. A rare 3-2 defeat to Colombia was preceded by an entertaining 2-2 draw with defending World Champions Germany, proving that this new young crop of French footballers have what it takes to match with the best in the world.
Peru have been in brilliant form over the past year. They haven’t lost a single game since a 2-0 defeat to Brazil in November 2016. They have won their last 4 matches on the trot, including impressive victories against Croatia and Iceland. They enter this tournament with full confidence.
France and Peru in the World Cup So Far
France were handed a relatively straightforward opening fixture against comparative minnows Australia. However, it was anything but straightforward, as the Kangaroos brought their A game to the field, and gave France a royal scare. Les Bleus needed a fortunate deflected striker from Paul Pogba in the dying minutes of the game to finally get over the finishing line.
Peru have been in stunning form of late, not losing a single game in more than 18 months. However, that run was ended by an extremely resilient Denmark side, who managed to shut out the South American to achieve a priceless 1-0 victory.
Head To Head Record
These two nations have never met in any fixture before.
Along with Spain, France have dropped some of most high profile players in the world, to the shock and dismay of many fans. Manchester United’s mercurial winger Antony Martial and FC Bayern’s Kingsley Coman could not find a space in the final 23 man squad. Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema was excluded as expected, but an even bigger omission was that of Arsenal’s new striker Lacazette, while the player he essentially replaced at the club i.e. Olivier Giroud being selected instead. Dimitri Payet also lost the race against time to be fit for the tournament.
Peru received a huge boost when the FIFA ban on marquee player Paolo Guerrero was lifted recently, and he was cleared to play the World Cup. Apart from that the team has developed a possession style brand of football, which has earned them brilliant victories recently and are looking in good shape to make a mark at the World Cup.
Players To Watch Out For
When it comes to France, the spotlight will firmly be on their number 10 Antoine Griezmann, who won the Golden Boot as well as the Golden Ball at Euro 2016, to prove that he can elevate his game when it comes to playing for his nation. Premier League midfield enforcers Paul Pogba and N’golo Kante will be looking to live up to the hype and form a formidable partnership in the middle. This could also be Ousmanne Dembele’s chance to announce himself at the biggest stage of them all.
Peru would be glad to have Paolo Guerrero back in the squad, as his leadership qualities will help them push forward. He is one of their biggest names and would be looking to be amongst the goals. Andre Carillo and Christian Cuevas are the other big name forwards expected to make a difference for them.
France Vs Peru Betting Odds And Key Statistics
- France are the favourites for this clash, and would be looking to top Group C to gain a favourable second round draw.
- Peru scored 27 goals during the qualifiers and are actually unbeaten in almost 18 months, a stat which makes us believe they can trouble France a bit, but eventually the European may be just too strong for them
- Antoine Griezmann was the top scorer at the Euro 2016 campaign, and betting on him to open the scoring in this match would be a good idea.
- France and Peru both are more than capable of rattling their respective opposition’s defences. Hence, we advise betting on the over 2.5 goals market.
- Peru have a knack of conceding from set pieces, and Griezmann, Fekir and Pogba are all set piece specialists, while France are also good in the air, hence that bodes well for them.
- We also recommend betting on Griezmann to score more than once.
While Peru have been in solid form and may look to surprise a few teams, France have one of the strongest squads in the world and we expect them to dominate and win this match by a narrow margin.
Our Predicted Scoreline: France 2-1 Peru
