Today’s Predictions:  Colombia Vs Senegal

Colombia 1- 0 Senegal

Senegal vs Colombia

The 46th match of the FIFA World Cup 2018 will take place between Senegal and Colombia.

  • Date : 28th June 2018
  • Time 7:30 PM (IST)
  • Venue : Samara Stadium

Predicted to be one of the most important matches to watch out for, between two fluent attacking sides, this match will directly affect who qualifies as well as who tops this group.

FIFA World Cup Qualification

Colombia were not very convincing during the qualifers, with not a single win against the sides ranked higher than them, including a home and away defeat to Argentina. However, they did not lose any ground against the lower ranked teams, and a resounding win over the previously unbeaten Ecuador and a an away draw against Peru on the final day earned them automatic qualification.

Senegal, inspired by the talismanic Liverpool forward Sadio Mane, comfortably topped their group as well, scoring 2 goals or more in almost all their matches. They were unbeaten in their group with 4 wins, including a crucial sealer against South Africa. They scored 10 goals and their qualification never looked in any doubt.

Team Form

Senegal have endured a poor run of form after their qualifiers, with a defeat to Croatia and draws against Uzbekistan, Luxembourg and Bosnia. However, they turned that around with a professional 2-0 victory over fellow World Cup challengers South Korea, to prove they are in good shape for this tournament.

Colombia have 2 wins and 3 defeats in their last 6 matches, but they suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat to South Korea in November last year. Just a week after thrashing China 4-0, Colombia earned their biggest win in recent times when they beat tournament favourites France 3-2 in March. They’ve had 2 goalless draws in their most recent fixtures, an improvement to their otherwise erratic defence.

Senegal and Colombia in the World Cup So Far

Senegal surprised the world with a power packed performance that left Poland feeling clueless and shocked. Their players dominated the game with their pace and stamina, while the Polish midfielders were being outrun embarrassingly. In their second game, they had full control against Japan, leading 2-1 before giving up their lead as Japan scored a late equalizer.

Colombia had the worst possible start to their World Cup campaign with a red card within the first few minutes, leading to a penalty that Japan scored and proceeded to have the upper hand throughout the match. The South Americans showed great spirit however, coming back from 1-0 down despite being a man down, but eventually conceded another winner and lost. In their second game, they truly made amends as they completely thrashed Poland 3-0 to take control of their qualification chances.

Head To Head Record

These two nations have met just once before, in an entertaining 2-2 draw in a friendly in 2014.

Team News

One of Senegal’s big names with Premier League experience, Mame Baram Diouf was not called up after missing several games due to injury recently. However, he is back in the squad now. Mbaye Niang has now won 3 caps for the Senegal national team and is fully eligible to play for them despite turning out for Franc U-21s earlier.

Colombia do not have any major injury worries, with their main striker Radamel Falcao determined to make up for missing out last time. Many new young players have been added to the batch of 2014, none more impressive than Barcelona’s towering center back Yerry Mina and attacking midfielder Edwin Cardona. Carlos Sanchez is still suspended following his straight red card against Japan.

Players To Watch Out For

Senegal’s star man is unsurprisingly Sadio Mane, with the Liverpool forward back of a brilliant performance in the Champions League final, after he was forced to take charge of the attack as Mohammed Salah’s walked off injured. One of the best players to emerge out of the continent in recent times, Mane can change a game single handedly and is an explosive player. Napoli’s much sought after defender Koilibaly is also a huge star, and keeps Senegal rock solid at the back.

The last World Cup’s golden boot winner James Rodriguez is still the biggest star in the side, having regained his form and confidence at Bayern Munich. He would be central to whatever they create in attack once again. Radamel Falcao and Caros Bacca would be looking to carry their club form to the World Cup to establish a lethal attacking partnership.  Juan Cuadrado and Quintero have been in great form as well.

Senegal Vs Colombia Betting Odds And Key Statistics

  • Colombia are the favourites for this clash, and this is a must win game for them as even a draw will most likely lead to an exit, unless Japan loses to Poland heavily.
  • This is just Senegal’s second appearance at the FIFA World Cup, with their previous one being that magical quarter final run in 2002 when they shocked the world by knocking out defending champions France, and scoring 7 goals in the tournament.
  • This will be Colombia’s 7th World Cup appearance, and they won 4 out of their 5 matches at the 2014 World Cup to reach the final 8.
  • Colombia have a strong attack, but their defence tends to leak in easy goals, especially their keeper David Ospina, who endured a frustrating season at Arsenal, and is capable of making crucial mistakes.  Senegal are a very attacking side as well, hence, we would advise you to bet on the both teams to score market as well as the above 2.5 goals market.

Predicted Result

We expect Colombia to replicate their devastating attacking prowess as was the case against Poland. It’s a must win game for them, and we believe James Rodriguez and his teammates have way too much quality to overcome Senegal.

Predicted Scoreline : Colombia 3-1 Senegal
