Brazil are still looking to get their first win of the campaign after a disappointing draw with Switzerland, while Costa Rica are expected to finish bottom of this group.

FIFA World Cup Qualification

Brazil have become a force to be reckoned with again under new coach Tite, who led the Selecao to 10 victories in 12 qualifying games, making them the first team to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2018 and also maintain their record of qualifying for every single World Cup till date. They conceded just 3 goals in the qualifiers and enter this tournament as favourites.

Costa Rica won their initial qualifying group with 16 points. In the second round, they had a mixed run of results, including not winning any of their last 3 matches. However, they won home and away against both Trinidad & Tobago as well as the USA to seal their qualification. They finished second in their group with 16 points again.

Team Form

Brazil have been flying high every since their humiliating exit at the previous World Cup semi final stage. They have won 4 out of their last 5 matches, conceding just 1 goal, a run which includes a dominating win over current world champions Germany. More importantly, they played these matches without Neymar, something which will surely give their fans immense hope for a successful tournament.

Costa Rica have been in poor form in recent weeks, with 4 defeats in their last 6 matches, including a brutal 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Spain. That was followed by a big defeat to Tunisia. Their only 2 wins came against Northern Ireland and Scotland. They lost to the England convincingly in their most recent game. They began their World Cup campaign with a narrow defeat, and looking like becoming the first team to get knocked out of the group stages.

Brazil and Costa Rica in the World Cup So Far

Brazil were expected to demonstrate their famous free flowing brand of football and demolish every opposition team in this world cup. However, their fans would be disappointed, as they could not beat an inspired Swedish side despite taking an early lead.

Costa Rica were defensively sound against Serbia, however they got unlucky as Kolarov struck an amazing freekick to break the deadlock and give Serbia a narrow 1-0 victory. Costa Rica would again try to keep Brazil at bay with a super defensive formation.

Head To Head Record

These two South American nations have met 10 times in their history, with Brazil winning 9 of those matches. Costa Rica’s maiden victory came 58 years ago.

Team News

Brazil would be massively boosted by the return of Neymar, who has been resting since a severe injury that had ruled him out for several months at PSG. However, unlike the 2014 World Cup, Brazil’s greatest strength is that they do not solely rely on Neymar anymore. With a plethora of attacking talent at their disposal, the likes of Coutinho, Willian, Firmino etc have all been flourishing at the club level. Combine that with Real Madrid pair Marcelo and Casemeiro, the South American giants have quality spread across the field. David Luiz and Alex Sandro are two shocking exclusions from the final 23 man squad though.

Costa Rica have a few great players who are playing for some of the top clubs in Europe. They are also filled with young locally based players who offer great pace and energy on the pitch. The would be boosted by the return of Captain Bryan Ruiz and striker Joel Cambell, from long-term injuries. Striker Alvaro Soborio will miss his second consecutive World Cup due to injury, and has effectively retired as a result.

Players To Watch Out For

Brazil have several world class players on offer, none more so than the magical Neymar, who has already shattered many goal scoring records at such a young age. Marcelo and Casemeiro are two of the best players in their respective positions, while they fluidity brought upon by Coutinho, Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino is a delight to watch.

Costa Rica have their own set of stalwarts who were at the forefront of their amazing run till the final 8 in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Real Madrid’s first choice goalkeeper Keylor Navas is undoubtedly their most high profile player. Their captain Bryan Ruiz has also played at the highest level and would be looking to inspire his squad to over achieve again. Joel Cambell is also one to watch, with the striker’s eye for goal, and sharp reactions widely appreciated.
