ICC World Cup Match 39 Squad Comparison

Sri Lanka

After their 2nd win of ICC World Cup 2019 defeating England at Leeds, Sri Lanka faced South Africa in the next match. Kusal Perera and Avishka Fernando got the side off to a good start after losing the skipper on the first ball. After a 67-runs partnership for the 2nd wicket, Sri Lanka lost wickets regularly. The middle order batsmen Angelo Matthews and Kusal Mendis were very cautious with their approach which eventually didn’t work out for them as Sri Lanka were all-out for 203.

While they defended a low total of 232 against England with Malinga and de Silva picking up 7 wickets among themselves, the Proteas were better on this day. Du Plessis and Amla scored unbeaten 96 and 80 respectively chasing down the target with 9 wickets in hand. Defending low totals seems a possibility with the kind of bowling attack Sri Lanka has, but not a certainty. Sri Lanka needs a better batting performance if they’re to defeat the Windies. Scoring below par totals every now and then, puts pressure on the bowlers and they are less likely to pull of a miracle every match.

Sri Lanka’s batting is prone to collapse once they lose a few wickets in the middle following a good partnership. Windies pacers on their best day can restrict any side to a below par score.

West Indies

Windies lost out on a few close chances in this tournament (against Australia and New Zealand) which affected their chances of making it to the semi-finals. Had they seized those moments, they would have still been alive in the tournament. Their bowling has been good, with a few exceptions like the match against Bangladesh. In their last game they got India to 180-5 and had Dhoni play at a slow strike rate for most of his innings.

Their top order has failed consistently with no special innings from Chris Gayle so far, and no consistent batsmen in the line-up, Windies have been vulnerable with the bat. Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran have great potential in the middle while Jason Holder also has delivered some good innings with the bat. The batting goes with number 7, Carlos Brathwaite scoring a hundred chasing 292, West Indies have what it takes to defeat any side in this tournament. It is a question of consistency at the top, the lack of which puts the middle order under pressure. If Hetmyer and Holder play their natural game, they can be explosive and score at great strike rates. The top order needs to have long partnerships and set a platform for their middle and lower order to capitalise on.

If West Indies batsmen aren’t cautious with their shot selection and don’t put their best foot forward, Sri Lankan bowlers might well just walk over them. Windies batting collapsed in the last match against India, though it was a tight disciplined Indian bowling attack they were up against. Sri Lanka has Malinga, Suranga Lakmal and Dhananjaya de Silva who can trouble the Windies batting.

Our Prediction for Sri Lanka vs West Indies

West Indies are favourites to win this match

While West Indies’ batting performance was below par in the last match, they have been better than Sri Lanka in this World Cup. Sri Lanka’s batting on the other hand has consistently collapsed after good partnership at the top. Overall, West Indies have a stronger and better side among the two and will start as favourites to win this match.
