Sri Lanka

Skipper Dinesh Chandimal’s statement that they played well yet lost in the 4th ODI would do little to settle down the frustration of Sri Lankan fans who keep turning up in numbers to support the team and yet see them lose almost on a regular basis. It was again a case of the top order failing to put up a good score on a decent batting strip and the bowlers failing to apply pressure when rain was in the horizon. Even Chandimal’s captaincy is being questioned in terms of rotating his bowlers. It all seems to fall into a script where every player in the team looks at someone else to perform instead of raising their hands.

Wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella’s has finally found some form at the opening slot with good innings in back to back games but his partner Sadeera Samarawickrama has to do better to retain his place in the side. Kusal Mendis’ bad run with the bat continues and this is hurting the team while skipper Chandimal has to score at better pace against a side like England who can chase down big totals. Chandimal proud of the way Dasun Shanaka batted and so did Thisara Perera lower down the order. In the bowling front Lasith Malinga is in good form and so is Akila Dananjaya and Amila Aponso also bowled a decent spell in the context of the last game but with the batting line-up not in the best of form they would need to do better than what they have done in the series so far if they are to win the last game.

Eoin Morgan is a happy man and why shouldn’t he be as his team is going about their business in a clinical manner. While a 3-0 result going into the last game shouldn’t surprise many given the difference of form and talent in the two sides, even the English skipper wouldn’t have expected the Sri Lankans to surrender at home so easily. For Morgan everything is going according plans. His bowlers are not allowing the Sri Lankan side to pose big totals and the top order has been firing in all games and winning them. Their domination has been so much in the series that the batting order below No. 6 hasn’t had to bat even once in the last three games that the side has won.

Batting wise the English side has performed brilliantly in this series. Their openers Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy have given the side brilliant starts while Joe Root and Eoin Morgan have been exceptionally good in the series. With the likes of Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali in the middle order they have one of the best ODI batting line-ups at the present which makes the job challenging for the Sri Lankans. The bowling strength complements the batting line-up perfectly with Chris Woakes, Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid being in brilliant form in the last few games. They have answers to all the challenges that are likely to be posed by the Sri Lankans in the next game.

It has been a one-sided ODI series so far and with the form two sides are in England would start as favourites to win the 5th game and seal the series 4-0.

Our Prediction for Sri Lanka vs England 5st ODI

England will win the 5th ODI

The 5-Match ODI series between hosts Sri Lanka and England has been marred by rain. It has raised serious question marks on the scheduling of the series during this time of the year. We have had one game washed away so far, one reduced to 21 overs and two games decided by DLS method. It has been raining all around and metaphorically hosts are being washed away every time they take the field. With only one game to go the Englishmen have already won the series 3-0 and look forward to making it 4-0 at Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. For the hosts who don’t seem to have a clue about winning games anymore it would all be about playing for pride and preventing a whitewash in front of their home crowd.
