While Sri Lankans played like school boys in the 1st Test Match as remarked by their coach Chandika Hathurusingha their performance in the 2nd game showed great signs of improvement. But this wasn’t enough as they lost the game and the series. Stand-in skipper Suranga Lakmal captaining the side in absence of injured Dinesh Chandimal is staring a humiliating 3-0 whitewash at home and given the form and temperament his boys have shown during England’s tour this doesn’t seem unlikely. All they have done in the two games so far is play well in patches and depend on individual brilliance. There has been little to talk about in terms of team effort and this is something Chandimal would have to work on to regain some of their lost pride in front of home fans.
The problem with the Sri Lankan batting has been at the top. Kaushal Silva has failed to impress in this Sri Lanka vs England Test series. His opening partner Dimuth Karunaratne though played two good knocks in the last Test but failed to turn them into big scores. The story is almost the same with Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Mendis who are failing to convert their starts. Only the veteran Angelo Mathews along with Roshen Silva and Niroshan Dickwella at the lower end seem to be hold the batting together. The bowlers have fared better in the series and Dilruwan Perera has shown great control with the new ball while Akila Dananjaya is troubling the English batsmen. If there is good support from Suranga Lakmal and Malinda Pushpakumara they can trouble the English line-up.
English skipper Joe Root having won the series would have his eyes fixed on a 3-0 whitewash. Not many skippers can boast about a white-wash on an away tour in the recent years where most teams are defending their fort well. Along with his individual form everything else seems to be in perfect order for the side. They are batting well against the Sri Lankan spinners and their bowlers have continuously made the home side struggle in both the Test Matches so far. Having done well through this long tour Root would like to end it on a winning note in the last Test Match.
The opening combination for England with Rory Burns and Keaton Jennings has done well in the series so far and they would look to give the perfect start in this game as well. Ben Strokes at No. 3 and Joe Root at No. 4 make it a great middle order and Root showed his batting talent with a brilliant hundred in the 2nd innings in the last game. With Jos Butler, Ben Foakes and Moeen Ali at the bottom half the side bats deep which is a huge plus. James Anderson hasn’t had the best of series so far and with Sam Curran likely to miss due to injury Stuart Broad should come into the side. But it is the three spinners Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid and the youngster Jack Leach who will need to set up a win for the side making use of the conditions.
Our Prediction for Sri Lanka vs England 3rd Test Match
England will win the 3rd Test Match
Sri Lanka’s woes with the bat continue and it has been a far longer run to call it dip in form. There seems to be something fundamentally wrong with the team selection and management as most of the youngsters don’t seem to play as per the requirements. The top order’s temperament is causing problems for the side. England on the other hand is showing how good a touring side they with the right balance in the batting and bowling departments. They even have better spinners compared to the Sri Lankans. The home team has only pride to play for at Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo while the Englishmen wouldn’t like to throw away the opportunity of whitewashing them.
All said and done England is overwhelmingly favourites to win the 3rd Test Match and make it 3-0 in the series. Sri Lanka would have to pull some magic out of their bags to prevent the English side from winning this game.
