Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan coach Chandika Hathurusingha’s outburst terming his team’s performance in the 1st game as school boyish is a testimony to the problem the side is dealing with. Such outbursts at the middle of a home series are unheard of. But skipper Dinesh Chandimal finds his side in a horrible situation where they have lost the hunger to win matches. The batting is awful; bowling is poor and worst even the die-hard Sri Lankan fans aren’t turning up in numbers to support the side. Amidst this crisis he has to lift the spirits of the side who are facing a huge confidence issue. He would have to something out of the box to prevent a SL vs ENG series defeat in the upcoming game.

Batting was a story of struggle for the side in the first Test Match. Openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Kaushal Silva failed to give the kind of start they need against a formidable opposition. While Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Mendis did bat well in the second innings damage was already done. Skipper Chandimal failed in the game and it was only the comeback man Angelo Mathews who showed some fight in the middle. As a batting unit they have to fire to challenge the English side. Bowling was below par in conditions that are familiar to the side. Dilruwan Perera was the only performer among bowlers. Rangana Herath didn’t become part of the honours board in his last game while Suranga Lakmal and Akila Dananjaya would have to pull up their socks if they wish to win the next Test Match.

English skipper Joe Root would be elated with the win in the 1st Test Match. It was a comprehensive win in the opposition’s backyard and one that came on the back of great batting and bowling performance from his players. Root’s team has been performing very well this summer and the kind of form they have shown in the 1st Test Match suggests they can win an away tour in the sub-continent which not many teams have done in the recent time. Ironical as it may sound while Sri Lankans are struggling with poor performances Root has selection problems at hand. Jonny Bairstow missed out the last game due to injury but his replacement Ben Foakes scored a great hundred. Root will definitely take field in the next game eying a series win.

England openers Keaton Jennings and Rory Burns looked great in the last Test Match especially Jennings who got that brilliant hundred in the second innings. They’d like to carry on with the form in the upcoming Test as well. The middle order shall gain strength with the return of Jonny Bairstow with Root, Ben Stokes and Jos Butler already there. Wicketkeeper Ben Foakes and Sam Curran ensure that the English side bats deep. James Anderson shall lead the attack with Sam Curran and Ben Stokes. England perhaps even has a better spin attack than their hosts going into this game with Mooen Ali, Adil Rashid and Jack Leach in the team.

Sri Lankans were overwhelmed by the Englishmen in the last game and the visitors are ahead in the race for the second Test Match.

Our Prediction for Sri Lanka vs England, 2nd Test

England is favourites to win the 2nd Test Match

Sri Lankan cricket is plagued by problems. The team which has had a miserable year in the ODIs and T20 was expected to put up a better fight against the touring English side in the 1st Test Match but they blew away their chances with horrible batting performance in both the innings. Rangana Herath’s last game in Sri Lankan colours turned out to be a forgettable outing as his side suffered a defeat by 211 runs. This was one format where the hosts had recently tasted success at home and were expected to put up a better show. As the action now moves to Pallekele International Cricket Stadium for the 2nd Test Match the home side will have to win it to stay alive in the series.
