Skipper Dinesh Chandimal would like to keep the horrors of limited overs cricket aside as they take on a formidable English side in the 1st Test Match. It has been a horrible period for the team in the last twelve odd months but thankfully their record in Test cricket has rather been impressive when they have played non-Asian sides at home. The team which is in a phase of transition seems to be facing confidence issues. The skipper would like to remind his boys of the convincing wins against the South Africans in the two Test matches earlier this year. Chandimal would hope his side plays to its potential and restore the lost pride for themselves as well as their fans.
Batting has been the struggle area for Sri Lankans in the recent months but in red ball cricket they have done well. Dimuth Karunaratne is batting well as an opener and with Kaushal Silva look to give a good start. The middle order is very strong for the Lankans with Dhananjaya de Silva, Chandimal, Angelo Mathews and Niroshan Dickwella. The strength for the team however lies in the bowling. If Suranga Lakmal gives the perfect start the spin trio of Rangana Herath, Akila Dananjaya and Lakshan Sandakan will spin their web around the English middle order. Herath who will be playing the last game of his career at Galle would like to sign out in style.
For English skipper Joe Root who had a fantastic summer at home against the Indians it would perhaps be one of the toughest assignments so far in his career. While they may have comprehensively won in the ODIs and T20 the Sri Lankan side is no pushover in this format of the game. With the visitors most likely to be greeted on rank turners it would be a test of character for the batsmen in these conditions. Root would however be confident given their form in the 1st practice game and also the way the team stood up to Indian challenge back at home. He would like to have the perfect start to the Test Series at Galle.
England have a formidable batting line-up and Keaton Jennings would open with a new partner Rory Burns in the post Alastair Cook era. They have a strong middle order in Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes. With the likes of Moeen Ali, Adil Rahid and young sensation Sam Curran the team bats low which will be handy against the Sri Lankan spinners. In their bowling department James Anderson and Stuart Board form the most experienced seam bowling pair in the world and with Curran and Stokes to complement them the bowling is strong. However in these conditions it may perhaps be left to Mooen Ali and Adil Rashid to bowl their side to victory.
Sri Lankans are a dominant force in Test cricket when it comes to play at home and going into the 1st Test Match they are nose ahead of their rivals.
Our Prediction for Sri Lanka vs England 1st Test
Sri Lanka is favourites to win this Test Match
England overwhelmingly dominated the 5-Match ODI series against the Sri Lankans and also won the only T20 game convincingly. But as we move over to Galle International Stadium for the 1st Test Match it would literally be a different ball game. However the downslide Sri Lankans have experienced in limited overs cricket over the last few years they remain a formidable Test side and haven’t lost a game to a non-Asian side at home in the last four years. A confident English side on the other hand would like to dent this impressive record taking on the Sri Lankan spinners and destroying the attack. Hence we should have a good and competitive Test Match on our hands.
