Our Prediction South Africa vs Zimbabwe 2nd T20
South African team looks favourites to win the 2nd T20i
A change in format hasn’t changed the fortunes of Zimbabwe as they lost the first T20 of the three match series against hosts South Africa after having been whitewashed in 3-0 in the ODI series. The visitors weren’t in the game apart from the first few overs while bowling when they dismissed the South African openers cheaply. The stark difference between the strengths of the two sides was on display throughout the match as Zimbabwe never really had any answers to the challenge posed by the hosts in their backyard. As the two teams move to Potchefstroom for the 2nd T20 the visitors will hope for a turnaround in their form and fortune while the hosts would look to seal the fate of the series in this game.
If their performance in the ODI series lacked expected lustre they opened the T20 series with a clinical win. Two early wickets at the top order in this format can dent the chances of a team but skipper Faf du Plessis in his comeback game ensured there were no hiccups. Along with Rassie van der Dussen and the seasoned David Miller he ensured South Africa reached a decent score which was enough for them to win the game. The bowling went according to the script and the visitors choked under pressure. du Plessis would hope there is no room for complacency as he leads the side in the next game and wraps up the series.
In the batting department South Africans are very strong. While wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock and debutant Gihahn Cloete missed out in the previous game they would expect to make amends in the next one. In the middle order they have three formidable players in du Plessis, van der Dussen and Miller who would not let Zimbabweans have it easy in the field. The bowling firepower is too strong for the visitors and 1st match was a testimony to that. If Lungi Ngidi gave nothing away Andile Phehlukwayo perfectly complemented him. But it was Imran Tahir who was too hot to handle for the visitors and the spinner foxed them grabbing a five-wicket haul. Junior Dala also bowled well and would have impressed his skipper.
Hamilton Masakadza is likely to be clueless about what can be done to change the fortune of the side against the strong headwinds his side is up against. Batting which failed miserably in the ODIs showed no signs of improvement. After the initial success with the ball in the last game the side didn’t have any answers to the South African onslaught. Like in the ODIs the batting was a display of poor shot selection and their trouble playing quality spin. It was only Peter Moor who seemed to have some clue about the art of batting in this format as he combined caution with aggression to score freely off the bad balls. It is going to be an uphill challenge for the side in the next game.
The opening combination Chamu Chibhabha and Masakadza looked clueless against the fast bowlers and this immediately piled pressure on the side. Two quick wickets and they saw the required run rate pile up leading to loss of regular wickets most of them to poor shot selection. Brendan Taylor threw it away after setting himself in while Tarisai Musakanda and Sean Williams fell to classy deliveries from Tahir. Peter Moor along with tail-ender Brandon Mavuta gave some respectability to the run chase. In the bowling department Chris Mpofu and Kyle Jarvis bowled well at the start but the later leaked runs in the later part of the innings. Brandon Mavuta stood out and his miserly spell prevented the hosts from putting up a huge total. The bowlers would have to dismiss the South Africans cheaply if they are to win with the weak batting strength they have.
South Africa made the perfect start to the series in the last game and going by the form they should win the upcoming game easily.
