Our Prediction SA vs ZIM 1st ODI:
South African team looks favourites to win the 1st ODI
African rivalry resumes as Zimbabwe begin their tour of South Africa with the first ODI game at Diamond Oval, Kimberley. There is a world of difference between the form and talent of the two sides with the hosts being No. 4 in the ODI rankings while the Zimbabwean side finding themselves in the 11th spot among the 14 teams. Before the crisis that has rocked Zimbabwe cricket for the last 15 years there were thrilling encounters between the two sides but it has been a sorry tale in the recent years. While it isn’t difficult to predict the winner for this game it would be interesting to see how the Zimbabwean team fares against their formidable neighbours in this series.
The South African team hasn’t played too much of ODI cricket this year and have been involved only in two bilateral series. Against India at the start of the year they had terrible run with the form and surrendered to them 1-5 in the six match series. In their last ODI series versus Sri Lanka they dominated in the first three games but became complacent in the last two games to finally win it 3-2 a result that would have made them little sad. JP Duminy who leads the team in absence of regular skipper Faf du Plessis who is nursing an injury wouldn’t want his side to repeat the mistakes they did in Sri Lanka as Zimbabwe has the team to cause a surprise.
With AB de Villiers having bid goodbye and injuries to Hashim Amla and du Plessis the South African batting order is without its stars. But Reeza Hendricks impressed with a century on debut and with players such as Aiden Markram, Dean Elgar, Duminy himself and Heinrich Klaasen South Africa have enough firepower to take on Zimbabwean attack that isn’t the best in the world. The bowling is threatening with Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi in great form. It would be interesting to see Dale Steyn’s fitness. Imran Tahir with his variations would trouble the opponents and complement the quality fast bowling attack.
The struggle for Zimbabwe to regain their stature as a competitive ODI side they once were continues. Skipper Hamilton Masakadza leads a team that has seen many lows since the start of the year. They lost 1-4 to Afghanistan in a 5-Match ODI series at the start of the year and then lost in World Cup qualifiers and won’t be in the mega tournament for the first time since 1983. Even in the last ODI series versus Pakistan at home they were white-washed 5-0 and the final score line fails to reveal how badly they performed in the series. Masakadza would know that the team has little to lose and look forward to some spirited performance from his side.
In the batting department skipper Masakadza and Tinashe Kamunhukamwe would have to provide the team the perfect start in the tournament. Craig Ervine, Brendan Taylor and Sean Williams have done well against good bowling attacks and they would have to make the most in the middle overs. Elton Chigumbura will need to play finishers’ role perfectly. Switching over to bowling Kyle Jarvis, Tendai Chatara and Williams would have to bowl well against the strong South African line-up. Masakadza knows the limitations of his resources in bowling and would have to use them smartly to offer South Africa serious competition in the match.
Zimbabwe would have to play out of their skins to defeat the South African side. As of now hosts South Africa are favourites to win this contest.
