ICC World Cup Match 21 Squad Comparison

South Africa

South Africa are yet to win a match in the ICC World Cup 2019. With 3 losses and a draw so far, they’ve got just 1 point and are placed 9th in the points table just above Afghanistan. Their last match against West Indies was cancelled due to rain, where South Africa were 29-2 when rain interrupted play. Given their batting in last 3 matches, it won’t be a surprise to see Afghanistan bowlers get the better of South African batting.

The only time the Proteas scored 300 plus was against Bangladesh chasing 331, as they finished 309-8, losing by 21 runs. Openers are struggling with the new ball, and have nicked back to the keeper in the early overs. While Faf du Plessis, David Miller and Van der Dussen have played a few good innings, they have been directed at building the innings after the early collapse and hence couldn’t contribute in scoring a big total or chasing one. However, Kagiso Rabada, Chris Morris and Imran Tahir will likely be too good for the Afghanistan batsmen and the last hope for South Africa to register their first win.

Afghanistan have lost 3 in 3 matches in the tournament, while their bowling performance against Sri Lanka was a pretty impressive one. Mohammad Nabi had turned the game on its toes picking up 3 wickets in an over, bringing Sri Lanka from 144-1 to 146-4. That pumped up the Afghan bowlers as they picked another 6 wickets for just 55 runs, dismissing the Sri Lankan side for 201. Aftab Alam was impressive with the ball in the next match against New Zealand as he dismissed Martin Guptill on the first ball of the innings. He finished 3 for 45, becoming the top bowler for Afghanistan and the only wicket taker in that match.

While there have been bowling performances from this side that would put the opposition under pressure, their batting performances weren’t quite mature as the tournament and format of the game demands. Chasing 187 runs target against Sri Lanka, the openers got off to a flying start with 34 runs on the board in the 5th over. Afghanistan lost their 1st wicket for 34 in that over and 4 more wickets fell within just 23 runs. Noor Ali Zadran and Hazratullah Zazai put on 66 runs for the 1st wicket batting first. After Zazai was out in the 11th over, Afghanistan lost 3 more wicket for just 4 runs. Ikram Ali Khil will be replacing Mohammad Shahzad for the rest of the tournament.

Our Prediction for South Africa vs Afghanistan

South Africa will win this match

While South Africa has struggled with their batting, this seems a good opportunity for them to back up and come back with a strong performance, especially from the openers. Lack of partnerships and patience in Afghanistan’s batting line-up makes it difficult to win matches even with great bowling performances.
