ENG vs IND 1st Test Prediction
England are firm favorites to get off to a winning start, given their form and home advantage. India have always struggled on English soil with their batsmen finding it difficult to negotiate the seaming cherry. Expect the pace duo of Stuart Broad and James Anderson to spell nemesis for more than a few Indians throughout the series.
Betting Tips and Odds
Bookmakers across the internet are unanimous in their choice of England securing a win at Edgbaston. All three of Bet365, Betway and SpinPalace have the odds of an England win at 1.95. The odds differ when it comes to an Indian victory – 3.25 on Bet365, 3.00 on Betway, and 3.20 on SpinPalace. A draw, on the other hand, is risky business (4.00).
Although the English speedsters will be keen to make the new ball talk and pick up a couple of Indian wickets within the first hour of the day, do not underestimate the patience of Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan. Back the Indian pair to build the foundation for a first innings lead for India (2.38).
The swing on offer in the first hour of the match can decide the fate of the teams. Both India and England have pacers who can extract bounce and movement off the pitch. Look out for the first wicket being bowled (5.50) rather than stumped or run out.
On a high after their 2-1 win in the ODIs, England will be looking to ride on confidence and carry forward the momentum in the upcoming Test series. Despite the fact that they haven’t been in the best of forms in the last few months (only 4 wins out of last 10 Test series), England will hoping to make the most out of their home conditions against the tourists.
Captain Joe Root, along with Jos Buttler, has been in fine form of late, and will be the key men for England, besides the veteran Alastair Cook.
On the rival front, India find themselves to be somewhat depleted after Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and Wriddhiman Saha were all ruled out because of their respective injuries. Dinesh Karthik is expected to replace Saha behind the stumps with Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami sharing the new ball.
The middle order of Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane must settle down early if they wish to contribute to their team’s cause. The menace of Broad and Anderson is not easy to deal with, but the trio must find a way out before it’s too late.
However, do not expect that to happen in the first Test itself. Edgbaston, as it seems, belongs only to England.
